Wandering Through Bochum: A Rainy Day in the Ruhr

the weather here in bochum is doing that whole "not sure if it wants to snow or just make everything soggy" thing. i just checked and it's 3.8°C and feels like it's trying to freeze your nose hairs. hope you like that kind of thing.

i rolled into town thinking it'd be all industrial grit and not much else, but bochum surprised me. sure, the old factories are still there, but now they're covered in murals and street art that make you stop and stare. someone told me that the zeche huette colliery is worth a visit even if you're not into mining history-apparently the light shows inside are wild.

walking around the city center, i ducked into a tiny café because the rain decided to go from "annoying drizzle" to "full-on waterfall." the barista, a guy with more tattoos than i have socks, recommended the bergbaumuseum if i wanted to understand why this place feels so...alive, despite the weather. i heard that the museum's underground tour is legit terrifying if you're claustrophobic, but also kind of thrilling.

if you get bored, essen and dortmund are just a short drive away, and both have their own weird charm. essen's zollverein is like the cooler, more famous cousin of bochum's industrial sites.

i ended up at the bochum museum almost by accident, and honestly? the mix of old and new art there felt like the city itself-gritty but thoughtful. someone i met in line said the planetarium is worth checking out too, especially if the clouds ruin your stargazing plans.

anyway, bochum isn't the kind of place that screams "instagram me," but that's exactly why i liked it. it's the kind of city that makes you earn its stories, one rainy walk at a time.
