Vero Beach: Where My Camera Lens Got Sticky

so i'm sitting here in vero beach, sand still in my camera's battery compartment like it's part of the gear now. *marshes everywhere you look, and these cows? man, they're just vibing on the horizon like they own the place. i swear one winked at me.

anyway, i just looked at the weather and it's feeling like 23.85°C right now, so if you're into that kind of sticky warmth, you're in luck. humidity's 79%, which basically means sweat becomes your new cologne. and the pressure? 1021 hpa - whatever that means, it's making my lenses fog up faster than my ex's excuses.

if you feel the need to escape for a bit, orlando's only a couple of hours north. but honestly? why would you? this place... the real magic is in those sunset marshes. i heard from this local dive bar regular that the best seafood shack is behind a gas station near 14th ave, but you gotta knock three times and say 'blue crab' or they'll ignore you. true story.

the sun is setting over a marshy area

here's the thing about shooting here: the light gets this...golden, greasy quality around 5pm. perfect for documenting the cows' eternal chill. i've got a whole series called 'bovine zen' now. check out their instagram if you're into that.

"that photographer? she fell in the mud chasing a heron. cried more over her lens than her shoes." - heard at Captain Hiram's Resort bar

someone told me the county fairgrounds have the best grits, but only tuesdays. and that the Indian River County Historical Society has old photos that'll make you rethink 'progress' - probably because they show how these marshes* used to be way swampier. pro tip: bring your macro lens for the dragonflies. they're tiny but aggressive.

oh, and if you get bored of the cows? melbourne's an hour south. but seriously, why? i heard the Vero Beach Museum of Art has this whole floor dedicated to people who paint cows. meta, right? anyway, my gear list is basically sunscreen, a waterproof camera, and antacids. you know, for the humidity. or maybe the local food. whatever.

for real though, if you go to that gas station seafood place, tell 'em i sent you. they'll probably charge you extra. worth it.
