São José do Rio Preto: My Weird Little Brazilian Adventure

so here i am in são josé do rio preto, a city i'd never heard of until last week. someone told me that... it's like the chicago of são paulo state - big, kinda industrial, but with a surprisingly artsy underbelly. i just checked and it's 24°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity's sitting at 69%, which feels like walking through someone's steam room but hey, that's tropical life for ya.

anyway, i rolled in on a beat-up bus that probably predates my birth. the kind where you're pretty sure the shocks are just old dreams and good intentions. first thing i noticed? the architecture's this weird mix of 70s brutalism and these colorful little houses that look like they're wearing party hats. someone said the best view is from the cathedral's tower, but i heard that... the stairs might actually be a deathtrap, so i admired it from the ground like a normal person.

food-wise, i hit up a place called *churrascaria bocaiúva (apparently it's been around since my parents were kids). the picanha melted like butter, and they kept bringing these little cheese breads until i thought i'd pop. pro tip: if you're into street food, the weekend market near the bus terminal has these pastéis that'll make you question all your life choices in the best way.

now, for the weather nerds among us - it's that kind of heat where you step outside and immediately consider becoming a nudist. but there's this breeze that hits you around 4pm like nature's apology for the day's crimes. i've been carrying a reusable water bottle everywhere because dehydration here is no joke.

if you get bored,
ribeirão preto and são josé dos campos are just a short drive away, though why you'd leave this chaos is beyond me. i met this guy at a bar who claimed he once drove to all three cities in one day just to prove he could. his friends called him crazy; i called him committed.

random discovery: there's this tiny bookstore called
livraria da vila that smells like old paper and possibilities. the owner, dona maria, will tell you stories about every book if you let her. i accidentally spent three hours there and walked out with a portuguese poetry collection i can barely read but totally adore.

random cultural observation: people here love their
forró* music. i watched a group of retirees dance like they were half their age, and i realized maybe the secret to life is just good music and zero self-consciousness.

would i come back? absolutely. there's something about places that don't try too hard to be cool that ends up being the coolest. são josé do rio preto wears its quirks like badges of honor, and honestly, i respect that.
