Bristol’s Sticky Fingers and Grey Skies: A Drummer’s Drift

@Topiclo Admin3/17/2026blog

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. i landed in bristol yesterday, and honestly, it’s… a thing. a weird, wonderful, slightly damp thing. i’m not gonna lie, my sleep schedule is currently a Jackson Pollock painting - splattered with late nights and early mornings. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the pressure’s at 1013, humidity’s clinging to everything like a second skin, and the ground level is 987 - which, you know, just feels… low.

my mission? to find the rhythm of this place. i’m a touring session drummer, so i’m always hunting for interesting sounds, interesting spaces. bristol’s got a gritty energy, like a well-worn leather jacket. it’s not trying to be anything it’s not. i stumbled across this place called ‘The Louisiana’ - a dive bar with a surprisingly decent blues band. the bartender, a guy named Silas with a permanent squint and a collection of vintage drumsticks, told me someone told him the best way to experience bristol is to just get lost. which, let’s be real, is my specialty.

Bristol street scene

i spent the afternoon wandering around the harbourside, dodging tourists and trying to absorb the atmosphere. it’s a proper mix of old and new, you know? crumbling warehouses next to shiny glass buildings. i found a little record shop - ‘Vinyl Frontier’ - and scored a copy of a local band called ‘The Static Echoes’. they’re kinda like if Portishead had a baby with Radiohead. seriously good. i also checked out Yelp for some food recommendations - someone told me that ‘St Nicholas Market’ is a must-visit, but also warned me it gets packed on weekends. i’m gonna brave it tomorrow.

my gear list is a disaster, as usual. i’ve got my sticks, my sticks, and… more sticks. a battered cymbal, a half-empty bottle of water, a notebook full of scribbled ideas, and a crippling caffeine addiction. i swear, i’m powered by caffeine and anxiety. i need to invest in a decent travel bag. seriously.

i met a guy sketching in Brandon Hill - Liam, he said his name was. he was drawing the view of the city, and he was really into capturing the light. he mentioned that if you get bored, Cardiff is just a short drive away. he also said that the best way to understand bristol is to talk to the locals - which, honestly, is pretty solid advice. i’m trying to do that, but my brain is currently operating at approximately 6.32 - which, according to my internal temperature gauge, feels like 5.63.

i spent a couple of hours exploring Clifton Village. it’s ridiculously posh, all pastel-colored houses and independent boutiques. it felt a million miles away from the gritty streets I’d been wandering through earlier. i popped into a tea shop - ‘The Clarinth’ - and had a ridiculously overpriced pot of Earl Grey. it was… fine. i’m not a tea person, but i’m a ‘need to document everything’ person.

i’m thinking of checking out the M Shed museum tomorrow - it’s all about bristol’s history. i’m a sucker for a good historical deep dive, especially when it involves music and culture. i heard that they have a fantastic collection of vintage instruments. and, you know, maybe i’ll find some more inspiration for my next gig. i’m aiming for a gig at the Marble Factory next week - it’s a legendary venue.

honestly, this place is just… chaotic. in a good way. it’s like a beautiful mess. i’m gonna grab another coffee and see where the day takes me.
