Athens, Greece: Lost My Headphones and Found a Whole Lotta Chaos (and Souvlaki)
okay, so. athens. i’m still picking feta crumbs out of my hair. i just got back, and honestly, my brain feels like a plate of moussaka that’s been dropped. i’m a touring session drummer, you know? I’m used to controlled chaos, tight schedules, and earplugs. this was…different.
I was here for a gig - a weird corporate thing, actually, playing background music for a conference on…sustainable olive oil. don’t ask. Anyway, the city itself? It’s a sensory overload in the best possible way. Like, imagine a thousand conversations happening at once, the smell of grilling meat battling with exhaust fumes, and ancient ruins casually leaning against modern buildings. It’s beautiful and overwhelming and slightly terrifying all at the same time.
The weather? I just checked and it’s…a damp sort of chill, hovering around thirteen degrees Celsius. Feels like twelve. I’m not gonna lie, I was expecting scorching sun and mythical heatwaves, but this is… brisk. Pack layers, people. Seriously.
I spent most of my free time wandering around *Plaka, getting hopelessly lost in the labyrinthine streets. It’s gorgeous, obviously, all whitewashed houses and bougainvillea spilling over balconies. But also, it’s packed. Shoulder-to-shoulder tourists, vendors hawking souvenirs, stray cats judging your life choices. I swear one of them gave me the stink eye when I dropped a gyro.
Speaking of gyros… seriously, eat all the gyros. I overheard a drunk guy at a taverna yelling, “Get the lamb! Always the lamb!” He seemed to know what he was talking about. I also stumbled upon this amazing little place called Kostas Souvlaki - apparently, it’s a local institution. Someone told me that it’s been serving the best souvlaki in Athens for fifty years. I’m not arguing. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g189400-d783688-Reviews-Kostas_Souvlaki-Athens_Attica.html
I lost my headphones somewhere between the Acropolis and Monastiraki. Just vanished. Poof. It’s a metaphor for my entire trip, I think. A little bit chaotic, a little bit frustrating, but ultimately… memorable.
I did manage to see the Acropolis, of course. It’s…impressive. Like, really impressive. But also, swarming with people. I’d recommend going early, or maybe even late, to avoid the worst of the crowds. And wear comfortable shoes. Seriously. You’ll be doing a lot of walking on uneven surfaces. I also checked out the Ancient Agora. It’s a much quieter experience, and you can really feel the history there. https://www.theculturetrip.com/europe/greece/athens/articles/a-guide-to-the-ancient-agora-of-athens/
My neighbors? If you get bored, Thessaloniki and Patras are just a short drive away. I didn’t make it to either, but I’ve heard good things. Apparently, Thessaloniki has a really vibrant nightlife.
I also spent a ridiculous amount of time browsing vintage shops in Exarchia. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but the atmosphere is amazing. I found a killer leather jacket for like, twenty euros. https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=vintage+clothing&find_loc=Athens%2C+Greece Someone warned me about pickpockets in the area, so keep your wits about you.
Pro-Tips (because I guess I’m supposed to give those):
Learn a few basic Greek phrases. Even just “hello” and “thank you” will go a long way.
Carry small bills. It’s surprisingly difficult to get change.
Be prepared to haggle. Especially in the markets.
Don’t drink the tap water.
Embrace the chaos. Seriously, just go with it.
I’m already dreaming of going back. Maybe next time I’ll find my headphones. Or at least another gyro.
