Oslo's Frozen Canvas: A Street Artist's Messy Winter Notes

okay, so oslo. gray skies, cold fingers, and walls begging for color. that's the vibe right now. and i just checked and it's feeling like negative something with a high of two point six, hope you like that kind of thing. if you're a street artist, this is a challenge and a canvas all at once.

trying to spray paint when your hands are shaking is a whole new level of dedication. i've been finding these industrial spots around the harbor where the wind is less brutal, but the paint still dries slower than molasses in winter. you have to work fast, but not too fast, or you get drips. it's a dance with the elements, man.

and the city? it's got this raw energy. the streets are covered in tags and pieces, some fresh, some faded by the weather. i've been told that the scene in grünerløkka is the place to be, but i also heard from a local that the police are really cracking down on unauthorized stuff. *be careful* where you choose your canvas. someone told me that a crew from berlin was here last month and left an amazing mural, but the city is trying to clean up the "mess". mixed signals, but that's the game.

the food scene is kind of hidden away, but if you know where to look, there are these little spots. i found a place in bjĆørvika that does killer waffles with brown cheese, which is a norwegian thing you have to try. this place on yelp is where i got mine. also, if you get bored with the city, sandvika and drammen are just a short drive away and have their own little art scenes. visit this local board for more on the street art.

the people here are interesting. they see the art and some love it, some don't. i overheard this tourist complaining about a piece by the opera, saying it was an eyesore. but then again, i also heard a local artist say that the city is becoming too corporate, losing its edge. it's a tough balance. the thing about oslo is that it's a city of contrasts: old and new, conservative and rebellious.

if you're planning to come, bring warm clothes and a lot of patience. the paint doesn't like the cold, and the weather changes every five minutes. also, check out this tour on tripadvisor if you want to see the legal walls. sometimes the best art is the one you have to hunt for, but having a guide doesn't hurt.

that's all for now. back to the wall. fingers crossed the paint sticks.
