Jambi: The Unexpected Indonesian City That Caught Me Off Guard

okay so here i am in jambi and wow, what a place. i landed here thinking it'd be just another indonesian city but this one’s got its own weird rhythm. the weather right now is a steamy 21.45°C but feels like 22.21-basically, it's humid as hell and my hair's doing that frizzy thing i hate. i just checked and it's basically a sauna there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

first thing i did? wander the streets near the river. jambi's got this old-school malay vibe mixed with modern chaos. you'll see motorbikes zipping past street vendors selling everything from fried bananas to weird herbal drinks. someone told me that the best nasi padang in town is at a tiny spot called warung bundo, and yeah, it was legit.

if you get bored, palembang and bandar lampung are just a short drive away, though honestly jambi deserves more than a quick stop. i overheard a local saying the muaro jambi temple complex is worth the trip, even if it's a bit out of the way. i'm not usually into temples, but this one had me curious.

for food, don't sleep on the pempek-it's a local fish cake thing that's oddly addictive. also, the coffee here? strong enough to wake the dead. i grabbed a cup at kedai kopi pak raden, which a drunk guy at my hostel swore by. turns out, he wasn't lying.

the vibe here is messy in the best way-like the city's still figuring itself out. you'll see old colonial buildings next to shiny new malls, and somehow it works. if you're into offbeat travel, jambi's your jam.

i'll be honest, i didn't expect much, but now i'm already planning my next visit. maybe i'll even check out the nearby kerinci valley if i get brave enough for the trek.

oh, and before i forget, here's a little map so you don't get totally lost:

and because i can't resist, here are some snaps i took (or stole from unsplash, let's be real):
