Lost in the Lavender Haze of Aix-en-Provence

okay, so i’m still processing *Aix-en-Provence. seriously. the numbers 3361025 and 1710221701 popped into my head right before i even landed - weird, right? felt like a secret code to unlock the whole city. the weather? i just checked and it’s… a gentle warmth, clinging to everything. like someone’s perpetually holding a soft blanket over you. 18.32 Celsius, feels like 18.51. a little humid, yeah, 88% to be exact. pretty much the perfect excuse to wander aimlessly.

let’s be real, i wasn’t planning on coming here. budget’s been tight, but i saw a picture online - a wash of purple fields stretching towards the horizon, the kind that makes you question all your life choices in the best possible way. clicked ‘book’ before i could overthink it.

temp_min: 18.27, temp_max: 20.03, pressure 1013, sea_level 1013, grnd_level 999 - all the important specs.

first impression? chaos in the most charming way possible. cobblestone streets that twist and turn like a restless river. cafes spilling onto sidewalks, the air thick with the smell of coffee and something baking - maybe almonds? i’m not sure, but it’s intoxicating. the locals are… well, they give you this look, like they’ve seen it all before. a polite sort of amusement. someone told me that the best pastry shops are usually tucked away down the smallest alleys. could be true, could be just a local legend.

i spent yesterday just getting lost. i’m not even kidding. walked for hours, camera bumping against my chest, soaking it all in. found a little square with a fountain - the water was surprisingly cool. sat there for ages, watching people, feeling… content. it was a rare moment of peace, which is saying something considering my life usually feels like a slightly frantic game of Jenga.

Things you absolutely need:
comfortable shoes - seriously. those cobblestones are no joke.
a reusable water bottle - you’ll need it.
a good book - for those moments of blissful people-watching.
an open mind - because things rarely go according to plan, and that’s the point.

i stopped by a little place called
Le Petit Bistro - highly recommend. don’t go expecting fancy, it’s more of a hole-in-the-wall kind of vibe, but the steak frites were incredible. someone left a note on their table saying “best pain au chocolat ever” - pretty high praise coming from a stranger.

and the lavender. oh god, the lavender. fields and fields of it. i took a little day trip out to the countryside, and it was… overwhelming. in a good way. like being wrapped in a purple hug. i heard that the best time to see it in bloom is in early July, and i
just* missed it, but it was still magical. i’m thinking of checking out some local markets - the ones on TripAdvisor have some good reviews.

looking around, the neighbors are mostly happy folks enjoying the slower pace. if you get bored, Marseille is just a short train ride away - supposed to be a wild time. i haven't been yet, but i hear the nightlife is something else. check out Yelp for some local recommendations.

i'm trying to embrace the feeling of being completely untethered. no plans, no deadlines, just the open road (or, you know, the open streets of Aix). it’s a nice change. and honestly, it’s a little scary, but mostly… liberating. i’m thinking of spending a few more days here, just letting the lavender haze wash over me.

Lonely Planet has some good info too, if you’re thinking of heading here.

i’m gonna go find another café. wish me luck in not getting completely lost again.

Airlinestrips has a cool list of things to do.
