İzmir's Weird Charm: A Day in the Life of a Wandering Photographer

woke up to the sound of seagulls arguing outside my window. i’m in İzmir, and honestly, i didn’t plan this trip. just grabbed my camera and jumped on a bus after hearing a drunk guy at a bar say “İzmir’s got soul.” he wasn’t wrong.

i just checked and it’s 6.03°C there right now, feels like 5.07°C with the humidity at 81%. not exactly tropical, but the light’s perfect for moody street shots. my fingers are freezing but my lens is happy.

started the day at the bazaar. no plan, just wandered until i smelled something incredible. turned out to be a tiny shop selling özlem’s famous boyoz. someone told me that özlem’s been making these flaky pastries since before i was born. i believe it. they’re perfect.

walked down to the waterfront and got distracted by a group of old men playing backgammon. they didn’t speak english, but one of them handed me a cup of tea like i was family. that’s İzmir for you.

heard a rumor that the elevator in the Asansör is haunted. not sure if i believe it, but i went up anyway. the view of the city from up there? unreal. someone said the best time to go is just before sunset, but i was there at noon and still felt like i’d won the lottery.

if you get bored, Çeşe and Manisa are just a short drive away. but honestly, İzmir’s got enough going on to keep you busy for days.

random tip: don’t trust google maps in the Kemeraltı bazaar. it’ll send you in circles. just follow your nose and the sound of people yelling about prices. it’s part of the fun.

ended the day at a tiny bar in Karataş. the owner, a woman named Sevim, told me stories about İzmir in the 80s while pouring rakı. i didn’t understand half of it, but her laugh was contagious. someone said her rakı is the best in the city. i’m not arguing.

if you’re into photography, bring a fast lens. the light here changes so quickly it’ll make your head spin. and wear layers. did i mention it’s cold?

this city doesn’t try too hard, and that’s why i love it. it’s messy, loud, and full of surprises. just like me, i guess.

want more? check out TripAdvisor’s guide to İzmir or Yelp’s top spots. but honestly, just get lost. that’s where the magic happens.
