Heidelberg: A Sleepy, Coffee-Fueled Stumble Through Cobblestones
i woke up in heidelberg and immediately regretted every shoe choice i'd ever made. cobblestone streets, man. they’re charming until you’re hauling a backpack full of camera gear and your ankles are screaming for mercy. but hey, the air smelled like roasted almonds and old books, so i forgave the city almost instantly.
just checked the weather and it's *5.86°c right now, feels like someone left the fridge door open and forgot to close it. hope you like that kind of thing. i layered up like a lasagna and kept moving.
"if you want the best view, skip the castle tour and just hike up the hill behind the student prison. locals do it all the time."
that’s what a guy in a beanie told me outside a bakery. i believed him because he had flour on his shoes. the hike was steep, my lungs hated me, but the view over the Neckar River? chef’s kiss. misty, golden-hour vibes that made me forget i was sweating through my thermal layers.
if you get bored, Mannheim and Speyer are just a short drive away. heard Mannheim’s got a killer food scene and Speyer’s cathedral is basically a time machine. someone told me Speyer’s got the best döner kebab in the region, but that might’ve been drunk advice from a guy named Klaus.
anyway, here’s where i ate:
- Heidelberg Coffee Roasters - flat white so good i considered moving here
- Zum Roten Ochsen - old-school student pub, walls covered in graffiti and existential dread
- Schafheutle - fancy, but the schnitzel made me question all my life choices in the best way
and yes, i did the castle thing. it’s touristy, but the Great Barrel is absurd in the best way. like, who needs a 55,000-liter wine cask? romantics, apparently.
i’m not saying heidelberg cured my existential dread, but walking along the Philosophenweg* at dusk with a warm pretzel in hand came pretty damn close. if you’re into cobblestone charm, caffeine, and accidentally hiking more than planned, this place is your jam.
