Bristol, You Weird Little Gem (and My Damp Socks)

okay, so. bristol. i didn’t plan to end up here, honestly. the numbers - 2634853 and 1826655696 - those were just… floating around in my head. don’t ask. anyway, i was supposed to be in cornwall, chasing sunsets and pasties, but a last-minute gig fell through (touring life, amirite?) and i found myself staring at a train ticket to bristol.

and you know what? i’m kinda glad. it’s… different. it’s got this energy, this slightly chaotic, creative buzz that i really dig. it’s not polished, it’s not trying too hard. it just is. i just checked and it’s drizzling sideways, a proper Bristol drizzle, the kind that soaks you to the bone before you even realize it’s happening. there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

I spent most of yesterday wandering around Stokes Croft, which is basically a street art paradise. Seriously, every corner you turn, there’s another mural, another stencil, another piece of mind-blowing creativity. I even saw someone doing a live painting - a massive phoenix rising from the ashes, no less. It was intense. I’m trying to get into street art myself, but my skills are… rudimentary, to say the least. I mostly just end up with paint on my face.

I overheard some drunk bloke at the pub (The Coronation, highly recommend, by the way - good cider) saying that Stokes Croft is constantly battling gentrification. Apparently, there’s a big push to turn it into some kind of trendy, sanitized tourist trap. I hope they don’t succeed. It’s got too much character as it is. Food-wise, it’s been a mixed bag. I had some amazing vegan falafel from a street vendor near Castle Park - seriously, the best I’ve ever had. But then I also had a questionable sausage roll that tasted vaguely of sadness. Someone told me that the Clifton Suspension Bridge is a must-see, but it’s also crawling with tourists. I might check it out anyway, just to say I did. I’m staying in a tiny Airbnb in Bedminster. It’s… cozy. Let’s go with cozy. The walls are paper-thin, and I can hear my neighbor practicing the tuba. It’s not exactly conducive to a peaceful night’s sleep, but hey, at least it’s entertaining. If you get bored, bath and somerset are just a short drive away.

*pro-tip: wear waterproof shoes. seriously. and maybe a hat. and an umbrella. and a raincoat. just embrace the damp.

another pro-tip: check out the Harbourside. It’s got a cool vibe, with lots of bars and restaurants. I heard that the Grain Barge is a good spot for a pint. https://www.grainbarge.co.uk/

final pro-tip:* don’t be afraid to get lost. Bristol is a city that rewards exploration. Just wander around, soak it all in, and see what you discover. I’m off to find some more cider and maybe attempt to draw a pigeon. Wish me luck. You can also find some local events on this board: https://www.visitbristol.co.uk/whats-on
