Dust & Echoes in Valparaiso: A Slightly Broken Trip

@Freya Holm3/5/2026blog

okay, so, valparaiso. seriously. i’m pretty sure my brain is still buffering. i landed yesterday, and it’s… a lot. like, a really a lot. the air smells like salt and something vaguely floral, maybe jasmine struggling to survive on a crumbling wall. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 1792611875. i don’t even know why i’m writing this down, it just felt…necessary. 308224. it’s a number, i guess.

my accommodation? a tiny room above a ceramics shop. the guy, ricardo, he’s a total character. speaks almost no english, but he makes the best empanadas i’ve ever tasted. i overheard rumors that he used to be a tango dancer, which, honestly, feels completely plausible. the pressure is 1024, humidity’s at 75, ground level is 975 - it’s like the city’s breathing. weird, right?

i spent the afternoon just wandering. seriously, wandering. getting hopelessly lost in the hills, dodging stray dogs (they’re surprisingly bold here), and trying to capture anything vaguely interesting with my camera. my lens is starting to feel like a useless brick, tbh. i need a new one. or maybe just a nap.

there’s this one street, calle alegre, it’s basically a riot of color. murals everywhere, shops spilling out onto the pavement, music blasting from open doorways. someone told me that the best pisco sours are served at a tiny bar called ‘el secreto’ - i’m planning on hitting that up tonight. i heard that the bartender, a woman named soledad, has a photographic memory and can tell your life story just by looking at you. wild.

i’m trying to document everything, but it’s hard. it’s like trying to bottle a hurricane. the light here is insane, constantly shifting, casting these dramatic shadows. it’s beautiful and unsettling at the same time. i feel like i’m constantly on the verge of a revelation, but then i just stub my toe or realize i’ve eaten all my snacks.

i found a little cafe tucked away in a courtyard - ‘la sombra’ - and had a café con leche. it was…okay. nothing special. but the view was incredible. you could see the entire city sprawling out below you, a chaotic tapestry of buildings and streets. if you get bored, Santiago is just a short drive away, apparently. i’m not planning on driving, though. i’m pretty sure i’d end up in a ditch.

i’m starting to realize that travel isn’t about ticking off destinations on a list. it’s about getting lost, about stumbling upon unexpected moments, about connecting with people you wouldn’t otherwise meet. it’s about embracing the chaos and accepting that things will probably go wrong. and that’s…fine. actually, it’s kind of amazing.

i’m thinking of checking out the Museo de Bellas Artes de Valparaíso tomorrow. TripAdvisor says it’s worth a visit. also, Yelp has some decent reviews for seafood restaurants - i’m craving some fresh ceviche.

i’m exhausted. seriously, like, bone-deep exhausted. i need to find a place to crash before i completely lose it. maybe ricardo will have an extra empanada for me.

check out this map:

and if you're looking for more info, this local board is pretty active: https://www.valparaiso.cl/

and for some great seafood, give this place a look: https://www.yelp.com/

and of course, TripAdvisor has some helpful tips: https://www.tripadvisor.com/

seriously, go. just go. but maybe pack some motion sickness pills.
