sendai: where history whispers in the cold

okay so i ended up in sendai again. don’t ask how. sometimes you just follow the railway lines like a ghost train. the air bites here like a curious cat - 6°C but feels like 3 if you’re dumb enough to stand still. i just checked and it’s…that specific kind of damp chill that seeps into your bones, hope you packed thermals.

walking around feels like digging through a time capsule. the *date clan castle grounds are basically an open-air museum where samurai ghosts probably still play shogi. i swear i heard a warrior scoff at my fashion choices near the aoba castle ruins - or maybe that was just the wind.

A colorful boat in a body of water

someone told me that the izakaya tucked behind the
jozenji dori arcade serves yakitori so good it’ll make you weep into your beer. then another local warned me it’s basically a tourist tax trap. i tried it. verdict? both are true. check out the heated debates on yelp.

A man and a woman standing under an umbrella

if you get bored of ruins (why?),
matsushima bay is like 20 minutes away. pine trees growing out of volcanic islands? yeah, it’s that kind of dramatic. tripadvisor says it’s one of japan’s three scenic views but honestly, it’s just rocks with trees on them.

A woman sitting on a bench next to a body of water

i heard a drunk guy near the
sendai city museum* claim that lord date’s favorite teacup is still missing. then his buddy said it’s probably being used as a planter at the local dango shop. who knows? the city’s tourism page won’t tell you anything juicy.

sendai’s vibe is like a half-finished samurai scroll - beautiful but with smudges. perfect for wandering when your fingers are numb.
