Bokaro Steel City: Sweat, Steel, and Seriously Strong Chai
okay, so i’m currently melting. like, genuinely questioning all life choices that led me to be sweating through a t-shirt at…well, let’s just say it’s warm. i just checked and it’s…a furnace out there, honestly. feels like someone left the *oven on. the numbers? 38.65 degrees Celsius, feels like 36.27, pressure’s doing its thing at 1003, humidity’s a pathetic 14% (which explains the dryness, I guess), and the air’s thick enough to chew.
i’m here in Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand, India, because… honestly? a friend of a friend of a guy i met at a drum circle said it was “real.” and by real, he meant “not touristy.” he wasn’t wrong. it’s…intense. i’m a touring session drummer, so i’m used to weird places, but this is a different kind of weird. it’s the kind of weird where you feel like you’re constantly being assessed.
i’ve been trying to find decent coffee, which is proving to be a mission. i’m a bit of a snob, i admit it. i need my fix. i found a place on Yelp (https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Coffee&find_loc=Bokaro+Steel+City%2C+Jharkhand&ns=1) that claims to have “espresso,” but i’m skeptical. i’m bracing myself for instant coffee masquerading as something fancy.
the people here are…direct. i was asking for directions to the market and this woman just pointed and said, “go straight, don’t think.” which, okay, fair enough. it’s a pretty straightforward city, geographically. but emotionally? it’s a maze.
someone told me that the best biryani is at a stall near the bus stand, but you have to go before noon or it’s all gone. i also heard that the guy who runs it is a bit of a grump, but the biryani is worth it. i’m willing to risk the grumpiness. i’m also seeing a lot of steel plants, obviously. it’s a steel city, after all. it’s kind of…monumental. like, a constant reminder of industry and labor. it’s not exactly picturesque, but it has a certain raw beauty.
i’ve been trying to find some local music, but it’s been tough. i stumbled upon a forum (https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g304558-i8383-Bokaro_Steel_City_Jharkhand.html) where people are talking about a traditional music festival happening next month. i might stick around for that.
i overheard a conversation in a tea* stall - apparently, the best place to buy handloom textiles is in a village about an hour outside the city. someone warned me about the auto-rickshaw drivers, though. “they’ll try to rip you off,” they said. “haggle hard.” good to know. i’m also looking at some day trips to nearby places. if you get bored, Dhanbad and Jamshedpur are just a short drive away.
i’m trying to document everything, of course. i’ve been taking photos (https://www.instagram.com/explore/locations/23849948/bokaro-steel-city-jharkhand/) - the light here is incredible, even with the haze. it’s a photographer’s dream, if you’re into gritty realism. i’m also sketching in my notebook, trying to capture the energy of the place.
i’m starting to think this “real” place is going to be a lot more complicated than i expected. but that’s what i live for, right? the unexpected. the messy. the sweaty. i’m off to find that biryani. wish me luck. and maybe send water. https://www.lonelyplanet.com/india/jharkhand/bokaro is a good resource if you're planning a trip.
