würzburg wanderings: a photographer’s messy diary

i woke up with my camera bag half‑packed, the kind of morning where the light feels like it’s trying to decide whether to stay or flee. the *main river was a thin ribbon of silver under a sky that looked like it had been washed in weak tea. i wandered toward the alten mainbrücke, listening to the occasional clack of tram wheels and the distant hum of a market setting up.

weather note: i just stepped outside and the air felt like a crisp sigh, the sort of chill that makes your fingers want to tuck into pockets and your breath visible in short bursts. if you’re into that sort of thing, you’ll probably love it.

while framing a shot of the
würzburg residence, a lady selling pretzels whispered, “you know, the light here changes every ten minutes, like a moody model.” i laughed and kept shooting, catching the way the baroque façade caught the glow.

later, over a cheap espresso at a tiny café near the
marktplatz, i overheard two students debating whether the franconian wine tastes better with or without a slice of lemon. one swore it’s a crime to add citrus, the other said it’s the secret to surviving the winter.

pro tip: always carry a spare battery; the cold drains them faster than you think. also, a small microfiber cloth works wonders for those sudden foggy patches that love to cling to lenses.

if you need a break from the city’s stone streets,
bamberg and schweinfurt* are just a short hop away, perfect for a day trip when the cobblestones start to feel like a workout.

i ended the day by the riverbank, watching the sunset paint the old bridges in amber. a street musician played a tune that sounded half‑remembered, half‑invented, and i realized that sometimes the best photographs are the ones you don’t even plan to take.
