Waking Up in São Paulo: The City That Never Sleeps (Or Lets You)

woke up this morning to the sound of honking taxis and a million people rushing to work. São Paulo-population 12 million-feels like it's got its own gravitational pull. You either get sucked in or get out of the way.

i just checked and it's 24.78°C with 88% humidity right now, which basically means you'll be sweating through your shirt by noon. but hey, that's just part of the charm, right?

first thing i did was grab a coffee at *Cofee Lab in Vila Madalena. the barista told me their beans come from a family farm in Minas Gerais and i believed him because his hands were shaking from caffeine. if you're into that scene, check out their yelp page.

walked around a bit and stumbled into Beco do Batman-yeah, that's actually what they call it. it's this alley covered in graffiti that changes every few weeks. someone told me that banksy once said he'd never come here because "it's already perfect." probably a lie, but i like the story.

"You haven't seen São Paulo until you've been stuck in traffic for at least two hours,"

said a taxi driver who then proceeded to cut three lanes at once.

for lunch, i hit up
Mercado Municipal. the mortadella sandwich is legendary-like, people will fight you for the last bite. i heard from a local that Anthony Bourdain cried eating it. maybe that's just drunk advice, but it was damn good.

if you get bored,
Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte are just a short drive away-though "short" here means "pack a snack and maybe a pillow."

later i wandered into
Liberdade, the Japanese quarter. lanterns everywhere, street food that'll make your tastebuds do backflips. i tried takoyaki and burned my tongue but kept eating because it was that good.

"São Paulo is like New York if New York had better parties and worse subway etiquette,"

overheard at a boteco in Bixiga.

the weather's been all over the place-one minute sunny, next minute threatening to storm. typical tropical mood swings. if you're planning to explore, layers and a sense of humor are essential.

ended the night at a rooftop bar in
Itaim Bibi. the view of the city lights is unreal, and the caipirinhas hit harder than expected. someone at the next table was bragging about a secret speakeasy in Consolação* but wouldn't give up the address. guess that's just part of the game here.

São Paulo doesn't hold your hand-it grabs you by the collar and drags you through chaos, culture, and caipirinhas. and honestly? i wouldn't have it any other way.
