Veracruz, Mexico: A Hot & Humid Lens Blur

okay so veracruz. what a place. i just checked the weather and it’s 21.67 degrees celsius out there right now, feels like 22.16, so yeah bring a fan or something. the humidity’s at 87% which basically means you’re breathing soup. pressure’s 1012 hpa which i only know because my camera’s barometer app went haywire. if the stickiness gets too much, you can always bolt to xalapa or boca del río-both are like 30 minutes away by colectivo.

as a freelance photographer, this city’s a nightmare and a dream. the colonial architecture? insane. the light? sideways and golden. but my camera lenses keep fogging up like i shot them into a steam bath. i took 3531416 photos today. that’s not hyperbole. that’s my actual file count. and the timestamp 1484469922? that’s when i finally found a decent coffee. i swear.

someone told me the seafood at la mariscera is so fresh the fish probably winked at you. but also heard a local whisper that the place by the zocala charges tourist tax on ceviche. Yelp reviews call it ‘authentic’ but TripAdvisor says ‘meh’ so who knows. i stuck to street tacos which never lie.

here’s what i captured:

colorful street in Veracruz

sunset at Veracruz beach

getting around’s chaotic but fun. buses honk like they’re in a mariachi band, and taxis use their horns like turn signals. here’s the chaos mapped out:

pro tip: if your camera fogged up (it will), stuff it in a plastic bag with silica packets. learned that from a photography forum. also lonely planet has decent walking routes if you’re into that. just ignore their ‘vibrant’ descriptions-this city’s more like ‘dripping with history and sweat’.

i’d say avoid the fort san juan de ulúa at high noon unless you enjoy sunburns and sticky feet. but the graffiti? chef’s kiss. street art blog would have a field day here. honestly? veracruz’s 21.67°C heat makes you slow down. which is probably the point. now if you’ll excuse me, i need to nap in front of a fan.
