Tver: A Weird Little Russian Town That Got Under My Skin

so i landed in tver after a weird detour from moscow-like, three hours by train, but it felt like stepping into a different century. the weather? yeah, it's hovering around 7°c, feels like 5°c, and the humidity is at 91%. basically, you'll want a decent jacket and maybe a scarf unless you're one of those people who thinks cold is just a state of mind. i just checked and it's damp and chilly there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

first thing i noticed: the volga river is massive here. like, "i could kayak across it but i'd probably die" massive. locals told me the best view is from the imperial travel bridge, especially at sunset when the water turns into a mirror. someone told me that if you walk along the embankment at night, you'll see old men fishing with rods older than me.

now, tver isn't exactly a tourist magnet, which is exactly why i liked it. there's this weird mix of soviet-era buildings and pre-revolution churches. the kulibin house-museum is apparently where some genius inventor lived, but honestly, i just liked the peeling paint and the crooked windows. if you're into offbeat museums, check it out-TripAdvisor says it's a hidden gem.

food-wise, i ate at this tiny place called "dacha" where the borscht tasted like my russian grandma would've made it-if i had one. the waitress warned me the piroshki were "dangerously hot" and she wasn't wrong. yelp has mixed reviews, but i'd go back just for the free bread.

one night, i overheard a group of students talking about a "secret" bar behind a bookstore. i found it, and yeah, it's real-dim lights, soviet vinyls, and a bartender who mixes drinks like he's casting spells. i heard that locals call it "the escape hatch" because it feels like stepping out of tver and into another world.

if you get bored, moscow and st. petersburg are just a short drive away, but honestly? don't rush. tver's charm is in its slowness. there's a little park near the tver state university where people feed stray cats and argue about football. i sat there for two hours and didn't feel guilty about doing nothing.

oh, and the weather? it's that kind of cold that sneaks into your bones, so layer up. the humidity makes everything feel a bit soggy, but that's part of the deal.

here's a little map so you don't get lost:

and because no travel post is complete without photos, here's what tver looked like through my lens:

green grass and brown trees during daytime

a snow covered field with a light house in the distance

a body of water surrounded by lots of trees

after all that, i'm still not sure if tver is underrated or just forgotten. but that's the beauty of it-you get to decide. if you go, tell me if the borscht is still as good.
