Tokyo, Where the Wi-Fi Dies and the Strana Cola Lines Up

well, i just landed here after a 24-hour transit that involved a missed connection and a bus that smelled like last week’s sushi. the weather’s a weird one-i just checked and it’s…1.16 degrees celsius, which is like taking a sip of lukewarm soup in a winter coat. i’m not complaining, but my water bottle’s been sweating since i opened it. neighbors? if you get bored, hokkaido is just a short drive away. someone told me that the convenience store owners here trade in ghost stories instead of snacks. i heard that.

i found this place through a drunken yelp review that said, ‘the view is better than your life.’ turns out it was a typo. the building is covered in climbing vines, and the owner keeps a record player spinning 80s j-pop. i saw a photo on unsplash of a wooden bridge over a canal-

a building with a lot of trees around it

another image shows a street food cart with a sign that says ‘try not to die here’-

the third one features a statue of a fox wearing a hat-

i asked a local if the fox statue was real. they said, ‘it’s a folklore thing. don’t touch it, or it’ll take your wifi.’ that’s some next-level advice.

i’m a digital nomad, so my priority is finding places with free data. most cafes here require you to buy a coffee to get the password. i’m currently in a noodle shop that smells like regret. the reviews say, ‘the ramen is good but the silence is oppressive.’ i heard that from a guy who counted down from 10 inapanese.

someone else told me that the subway rats are trained to press buttons. i’m not sure if that’s true, but my paycheck doesn’t care. if you want to leave, tokyo’s just a hop, skip, and a metro ride from anywhere. spoiler: it’s not.

i left a tripadvisor review that said, ‘this place would make a good background for a noir film.’ it’s probably fake, but i’m leaving it there.

here’s a link to a local board where people complain about the coffee being too strong: tokyo-coffee-rants.biz. another one for yelp: jimmy-the-cat.yelp. and a random one: unsubscribe-from-wi-fi.com.

i’m not sure if i’ll stay. the temperature min and max are both 1.16, which is either a miracle or a curse. the humidity’s 92%, so my hair’s trying to become a wet noodle. neighbors keep knocking on my door asking if i need a puffer jacket. i don’t. i’m fine.

this place has that chaotic energy you can’t plan. you show up, and it throws you a curveball. like the weather. like the rats. like the fact that my laptop died at 3am and i had to write this post on a borrowed phone.

p.s. if you’re here, don’t ask about the fox statue. trust me.
