Tampa, Florida: Humidity, Hummers, and a Whole Lotta Weird
okay, so. tampa. i didn’t plan to be in tampa. touring with the band, you know? one minute we’re in asheville, the next we’re…here. and honestly? it’s…something.
i just checked and the air feels like a damp hug from a very enthusiastic stranger. twenty point oh five degrees, they say. feels like twenty point six two. the pressure’s decent, i guess, but the humidity? ninety-six percent. you’ll be sweating before you even think about ordering a sweet tea. seriously. pack light, breathable fabrics. and maybe a dehumidifier.
we’re staying near *Ybor City, which is…a trip. it’s got this whole historic vibe, all brick buildings and wrought iron balconies, but then you turn a corner and it’s just neon signs and bars blasting reggaeton. i’m not complaining, just observing. someone told me that the ghost tours are surprisingly good, especially around the old cigar factories. apparently, there’s a lot of lingering…energy. i’m tempted, but i’m also pretty tired.
food-wise…it’s been a mixed bag. i had some amazing Cuban sandwiches - seriously, you have to try one. check out Columbia Restaurant on TripAdvisor. it’s a classic. but then i also had this…thing…at some random diner that tasted vaguely of sadness and old grease. learn from my mistakes, people. read the reviews.
“Don’t eat anything that’s been sitting under a heat lamp for more than five minutes. Trust me on this one.”
and the people! oh, the people. i overheard a very enthusiastic gentleman at the bar last night telling everyone about his prize-winning pet iguana. apparently, it’s named Reginald and wears tiny sweaters. i’m not even kidding. if you get bored, St. Petersburg and Clearwater are just a short drive away. they’ve got beaches, which, you know, might be nice if you can handle the humidity.
pro-tips for surviving tampa:
*Hydrate. Constantly. Seriously, you’re losing moisture just by breathing.
*Embrace the weird. Tampa is…unique. Just go with it.
*Sunscreen. Always. Even on cloudy days, the sun will find you.
*Check Yelp for local bars. Yelp Tampa has some hidden gems.
*Don’t ask about the gators. Just…don’t.
I’m not sure i’d call this a vacation*, but it’s definitely an experience. i’m heading to a local music venue tonight - The Orpheum - to see what the scene is like. maybe i’ll find some inspiration. or at least some decent air conditioning. i also saw a post on a local forum Tampa Bay Reddit about a cool vintage shop, so i’ll check that out tomorrow.
“If you’re looking for something real, skip the tourist traps and head to Seminole Heights. That’s where the cool stuff is.”
okay, gotta go. my bandmates are yelling at me to find a decent cup of coffee. apparently, i’ve been slacking. wish me luck. and maybe send some dry air.
