shooting the breeze in gwangju: a photographer's frosty adventure
so i landed in gwangju and immediately thought, wow, this place has... character.
as a freelance photographer, i'm always on the hunt for that perfect shot - the kind that tells a story. gwangju? it’s got stories. i just checked and it's *absolutely freezing out there, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity is cranked up to 98%, which means my camera lens is constantly fogging up. pro tip: bring a lens cloth and a spare battery because the cold drains them fast.
i spent my first day wandering around the downtown area. the city feels alive, even in the cold. the streets are lined with these incredible murals, and the architecture is a mix of modern and traditional. it’s a visual feast.
food is a huge part of the experience here. i heard that the best jjimjilbang (a traditional korean spa) isn't the big fancy one on the main street, but this little place near the university. it’s a bit of a hidden gem. and the street food? oh man. the tteokbokki is spicy and sweet, the perfect fuel for a cold day.
someone told me that if you want to taste the real gwangju, you have to try the sikhye at this tiny stall near the market. it’s sweet, milky, and comforting.
i overheard a local saying that the best coffee in the city is at a hole-in-the-wall called 'bean there' - it's a bit hard to find but worth the effort. for more on the city's history, check out the gwangju may 18th democracy movement info - it's a big deal here. and if you're looking for recommendations, the official tourism board is pretty updated.
if the city starts to feel cramped, the coastal towns are just a short drive away. or maybe head up to the mountains* for some fresh air? they're not far. i might do that tomorrow.
