nyc in february: why i spent $20 on a hostel blanket and still found magic
i land in nyc at 2 am after a flight that cost more than my monthly rent. the weather app says it’s -1.33°c outside, which is technically ‘cold’ but also kind of fun? i’m a budget student here, so ‘fun’ means standing in a subway station with a blanket from a hostel that probably hasn’t seen a soul in months. my hostel roommate told me, ‘just bundle up and pretend it’s march,’ but i came prepared with a legally questionable amount of wool.
so i just checked and it’s this right now, hope you like that kind of thing. like, i’m out there wearing socks with holes because it’s cheaper than buying new ones. the neighbors? if you get bored, places like brooklyn or queens are just a short drive away. i heard that from a guy selling used thermoses on the corner. he’s probably not lying. probably.
someone told me that central park is basically a frozen tundra right now. i don’t know if that’s true, but i saw a couple running laps through the snow earlier. maybe they were just warming up for a murder mystery party? the latest neighborhood rumor is that bakeries are selling ‘arctic croissants’-toasted pastry with a side of existential dread. i’m not sure if this is a thing or if i’m hallucinating from the cold. i’m telling you, it’s either 80% nosebleeds or 20% weird conspiracy theories.
here’s the thing: nyc’s weather is like a bad ex. always unpredictable, sometimes hostile, but weirdly compelling. last week it was 0°c, today it’s 0.01°c. i’m starting to think the city is trying to tell me something. i managed to get coffee from a vendor near the subway entrance. their took-a-large-charge-for-cappuccino policy is why i’m a coffee snob now. i didn’t ask for this, but here we are.
i heard that the local food scene is thriving in the winter. some friends of mine (yes, i’ve made enough ‘friends’ to have friends of friends) swore by this spot on burr street. i didn’t check yelp because i’m broke, but i did hear through a thirdhand conversation that they serve a soup so hearty it’s basically a hug in a bowl. i’m 73% doubtful, 27% desperate.
map shows me exactly where i am: 40.3892,-74.082. that’s enough to get lost, but at least i can pretend i’m navigating by supernatural instincts. if you want to follow my chaos, check tripadvisor for hostel reviews or yelp for places that won’t charge you for existing. i linked a few below because why not?
i took three photos today. one of a snow-covered fire escape, one of a weirdly happy man in a brown hat eating pizza, and one of a plant that’s somehow thriving in this mess. here they are:
nobody seems to care about the weather here. i saw a street artist painting a graffiti portrait of a penguin on a wall while sipping a hot chocolate. the neon signs are brighter than they should be, like the city isn’t even trying to hide its panic. i’m not sure if i’m supposed to be inspired or terrified. probably both.
if you’re thinking of coming here, don’t listen to the reviews. listen to the people who haven’t washed in days. they’re more honest. i heard that the subway is always delayed, but also haunted by the ghost of my 2019 self who still paid $2.75 for a ride. maybe that’s just me. maybe nyc is just… okay. at least it’s not boring. or maybe it’s too much. i can’t tell. i’m cold. i’m hungry. i’m questioning life choices. these are all the same thing to me right now.
p.s. if you want ice cream, don’t go to the usual places. i heard that a truck near prospect park is selling frozen pops in neon bags. sounds like a disaster, but also kind of perfect. link to unsplash for more chaos:| check localboards for rumored subway credits. you’ll thank me later.
