Milwaukee Mishaps & Muddy Boots

okay, so, like, i’m pretty sure i’m running on caffeine and regret. 4890864 and 1840008134 - seriously, what are those numbers? they just… appeared. i found ‘em scrawled on a napkin at a dive bar called ‘The Rusty Sprocket’ - which, by the way, smells perpetually of stale beer and desperation. the temp was hovering around 4.06, feels-like 1.63, temp_min 3.3, temp_max 5.08, pressure 1017, humidity 89, sea level 1017, grnd level 986. yeah, that’s… unsettling. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. it’s like a perpetual autumn drizzle, you know? the kind that clings to your boots and makes everything look a little gray.

Milwaukee. it’s… a thing. a weird, brick-heavy thing with a surprisingly decent brewery scene. i spent the last three days wandering around, mostly trying not to trip over cobblestones and dodging aggressive squirrels. i swear, those squirrels are plotting something.

I started in the Third Ward, which is basically a collection of repurposed warehouses filled with artisan shops and overpriced coffee. i snagged a ridiculously complicated pour-over from ‘Blackbird Brew’ - cost me like, twelve bucks. worth it? debatable. someone told me that the best cheese curds are at ‘Kegel’s,’ but i was too busy battling a rogue pigeon for a parking spot.

Speaking of parking, forget about it. Seriously. Just… don’t. I ended up walking everywhere, which was great for my calves, terrible for my sanity. I stumbled upon this amazing little record store, ‘Vinyl Frontier,’ and spent a solid hour digging through crates. found a first pressing of ‘Remain in Light’ - felt like winning the lottery.

Then there’s the lakefront. it’s… expansive. like, seriously, you can see for miles. i took a walk along the Oak Leaf Trail - it’s mostly paved, which is a plus, but also incredibly boring. i saw a guy dressed as Captain America, which was a highlight. I overheard gossip that the Milwaukee Art Museum has a surprisingly good collection of outsider art. check it out: Milwaukee Art Museum.

I stayed at this Airbnb - ‘The Badger’s Burrow’ - it was… rustic. let’s just say the plumbing had a mind of its own. the host, a guy named Dale, kept leaving cryptic notes about ‘the spirits of the building.’

“Don’t stare at the wallpaper. It knows. And it doesn’t like being stared at.” - Dale, The Badger’s Burrow.

I tried to visit the Harley-Davidson Museum, but it was packed. massive line. i just… couldn’t. i needed a beer. and maybe a nap. i heard that the best sausages in the city are at ‘Sly’s Sausage House’ - a local warned me about the wait times.

Seriously, if you’re in the area, you should check out the brewery tour at Lakefront Brewery. It’s a bit touristy, but the beer is good and the tour guide is hilarious.

Milwaukee is… a place. it’s not glamorous. it’s not exciting. but it’s got a certain charm, a gritty kind of beauty. if you get bored, Madison and Chicago are just a short drive away.

Pro-tip: wear waterproof shoes. Seriously. And bring a flashlight. Some of the alleys are… dark.

Oh, and don’t trust the pigeons. They’re judging you.

Here’s a map of some of the places i visited:

Okay, I need more coffee. And possibly a therapist.
