mexico city: where the walls talk back
mexico city: where the walls talk back
so i landed in this city with a backpack full of spray cans and a head full of ideas. the air feels... well, it's kinda like the inside of a well-ventilated subway car but with more tacos. just peeked at the weather app, it's sitting at 22.86°C, which feels like 21.98 if you're into that kinda thing. not too shabby, not too hot, just right for getting up close and personal with some walls.
first thing i did? hit up the street art spots. you can find them in every alley, every corner, even on the sides of buildings that look like they're about to collapse. someone told me that the best stuff is in the centro historico, but that's where the cops are also the most watchful. so i went to la rom instead, where the walls are covered in color and the vibe is... well, it's a vibe.
and if the concrete jungle gets too much, puebla and toluca are a couple of hours by bus, i heard. but honestly, there's so much to do here you might not even want to leave. i mean, have you seen the food? this taco spot is said to have the best al pastor, but i also found a little gem in a alley for art that's not on the walls.
"yo, heard from a local that there's this abandoned building in condesa that's covered in gold leaf and murals. but it's guarded by this guy who'll let you in if you bring him a six-pack. true story? no idea, but i'm trying it."
then there's chapultepec park, which is huge. like, huge huge. i got lost in there for hours, found a castle and a bunch of people selling weird snacks. the air is a bit different there, less city, more... green.
"i heard that the street art scene here is so underground that some artists only come out after midnight, and they do these massive pieces in one night. it's like a ghost town until 3am, then it's chaos and colors everywhere."
my days are spent looking for the perfect wall. sometimes it's legal, sometimes it's not. the pressure? well, the air pressure is 1010 hpa, but the real pressure is not getting caught. the humidity is 30%, which means my paint doesn't dry too fast or too slow. it's like the city is setting the perfect conditions for art.
and then there's the food. oh man, the food. this place has the best mole i've ever had. if you're here, you have to try it. and the markets? like this one where you can get fresh everything, including these weird fruits that look like alien eggs.
so yeah, mexico city. it's loud, it's chaotic, it's beautiful. and the walls? they're my canvas. they talk back every day.
