Manila Mayhem: Sweat, Street Food, and Seriously Sticky Streets

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and the lingering scent of adobo. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 22.52 feels like 22.79, pressure’s at 1013, humidity’s clinging to me like a second skin - 75%. it’s honestly a miracle i haven’t dissolved into a puddle of exhausted blogger. i landed in Manila yesterday, and honestly? it’s a sensory overload in the best possible way. like, aggressively best.

I’m staying in Poblacion, Makati - it’s a proper hive of activity. The air smells like grilled squid, cheap beer, and something vaguely floral that i can’t quite place. My Airbnb is…rustic. Let’s just say the landlord’s aesthetic is ‘lived-in’ which translates to ‘mildly alarming.’ But hey, it’s cheap, and it’s got wifi, which is basically a win in my book.

Spent the morning wandering around Binondo Chinatown - seriously, it’s like stepping into another dimension. The streets are packed, the vendors are shouting, and the food…oh god, the food. I had siomai from a tiny stall that looked like it hadn’t been cleaned since the 70s, and it was divine. Someone told me that the best lumpia is at a place called ‘Lola Ising’s,’ but I haven’t found it yet. I’m on a mission.

I’m trying to document everything, but my camera’s battery died about an hour in. It’s a recurring theme, honestly. I’ve got a backup, but it’s…well, let’s just say it’s seen better days. It’s a vintage Pentax K1000, and it’s got a soul, I swear. It just needs a little TLC.

Speaking of TLC, I need a serious shower. The humidity is brutal. I’m pretty sure I’m sweating through my clothes. I’m considering investing in a portable dehumidifier, but that feels a little…extra. I heard that the *hotel spas in Bonifacio Global City are amazing, but they’re also ridiculously expensive. Maybe I’ll just stick to the public showers at the gym.

I stumbled across this incredible street art scene in Tomas Pinero - seriously, the murals are insane. It’s like walking through a giant, colorful gallery. I took a bunch of photos, but I’m not sure they do it justice. It’s just…vibrant. I’m thinking of trying my hand at some street art myself, but I’m not sure I have the talent. I mostly just end up making a mess.

Tonight, I’m hitting up a karaoke bar in Malate. I’m terrified. I can’t sing. At all. But everyone in Manila seems to think they can, so I’m just going to embrace the chaos. I heard that the
best karaoke is at ‘The Crazy Camel,’ but I’m not sure I can handle the crowds. If you’re looking for a good time, check out Yelp for some recommendations. Seriously, do it.

I’m trying to keep track of everything - my expenses, my photos, my sanity. It’s a challenge. I’ve got a spreadsheet, a notebook, and a rapidly dwindling supply of coffee. I need more coffee. Like, a
lot more coffee. If you’re looking for a decent cup, check out Coffee Project - they’re pretty good.

I’m meeting up with a local artist tomorrow, so I’m hoping to get some insights into the Manila art scene. He’s connected me with a few galleries, so I’m excited to check them out. He mentioned that the
Art Fair Philippines is happening next month - that’s definitely on my list.

Seriously, Manila is exhausting. But it’s also…amazing. It’s a city of contrasts - ancient temples and modern skyscrapers, bustling markets and quiet parks. It’s a city that assaults your senses and challenges your perceptions. It’s a city that I’m completely falling in love with. If you get bored,
Intramuros* are just a short drive away.

Okay, I’m going to go find some more adobo. Wish me luck. And maybe send coffee. Seriously.
