Manila: Concrete Dreams and Sticky Situations

just rolled into this chaotic vortex after 37 hours of transit with a laptop bag that smells like regret. my airbnb host said 'welcome to the city that never sleeps' and i swear i heard a siren 3 seconds later. speaking of which, just peeked at the weather app and it's that thick, wet blanket of humidity that makes your hair curl into question marks out there, so pack accordingly.

if you need to escape the neon buzz, *quezon city and makati are a quick hop by car. makati’s got those glass towers that look like they’re melting in the sun, while quezon city feels like someone spilled a university campus into a street food market.

someone told me that the best
balut (don’t google it) is served at this stall under a flickering neon sign in tondo, but only if you arrive before 6am or the vendor gives you death stares. also heard through the grapevine that the intramuros night tours skip the spooky parts because tourists kept crying.

surviving on
ube coffee and fried rice from this carenderia where the owner winked at me when i tried to pay with card. pro tip: always carry cash, or you’ll end up trading your laptop for a tricycle ride. the co-working space in bgy poblacion is decent but smells like damp socks and ambition.

last night i followed this
street artist into an alley where she was spraypainting jeepney murals. she said the city’s changing - ā€˜developers are buying up everything, painting it gray. we’re fighting back with rainbows and rebellion.’

before you go, check these:
- TripAdvisor Manila
- Yelp Manila
- Manila City Tourism

manila’s like a glitchy video game - frustrating but addictive. my fingers are stuck to the keyboard and i’m pretty sure the aircon’s leaking onto my passport. but hey, it’s cheaper than therapy. now pass me that
mango shake*.
