maisons-alfort: the paris suburb that surprised me

okay, so i didn't plan to stop here. i was supposed to be in paris, but the train was delayed and maisons-alfort was the first stop with a decent cafe. i figured, why not? and honestly? i'm glad i did.

first impressions: it's not flashy. no eiffel tower, no louvre. but there's something about the quiet streets, the way people actually say "bonjour" when they pass you, and the fact that you can hear birds over car horns. it's like paris's chill cousin who actually gets enough sleep.

*the weather was doing its thing-overcast, a bit chilly, that kind of damp that gets into your bones if you're not careful. i just checked and it's 9.29°c there right now, feels like 7.93°c, humidity at 87%. hope you like that kind of thing.

the food scene is surprisingly good. i grabbed a croissant from this tiny place called la maison du pain (no website, just show up early). someone told me that the baker there used to work in a michelin-starred kitchen but "got tired of the drama." whether that's true or not, the croissant was flaky, buttery, and probably the best i've had outside the city center.

if you're into parks,
parc des promenades is where the locals go. not huge, but perfect for a slow walk or pretending to read a book while actually people-watching. i overheard two old guys arguing about the best spot for fishing in the seine-apparently, the stretch near the pont de charenton is the place to be.

getting around is easy. the mƩtro line 8 will zip you into paris in about 15 minutes. but honestly, i'd stay here if you want a slower pace. it's close enough to feel connected, far enough to breathe.

if you get bored,
villeneuve-saint-georges and alfortville are just a short drive away. both have their own quirks-villeneuve's got a weird amount of comic book shops, and alfortville has this massive mural of a fish that i still can't figure out.

one weird thing i noticed: there's a veterinary school in the middle of town. like, actual cows and horses. i walked by and a student was brushing a pony. no idea if that's normal, but it made me smile.

local tip i heard from a barista: check out le bistrot des amis for dinner. no website, but it's on yelp. apparently, the owner sings opera while he cooks. i didn't go, but the drunk guy next to me swore it was "life-changing."

bottom line: maisons-alfort isn't going to blow your mind with tourist traps, but if you want a slice of real life near paris-without the crowds or the price tag-it's worth a stop. bring a sweater, bring your curiosity, and maybe a book for the park.
