lums)))i.e., the place where the wifi dies but the vibes stay stuck

ok i landed here at 3am after a flight that felt like it was stuck in a loop of bad weather and worse small talk. the moment i stepped out of the airport, this place started rain-dancing through the lens of my camera. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 14.89 degrees feels like the kind of temperature where your coffee goes cold but your coat holds you together. these folks here? they’ve got a fridge full of questionable preserves and a playlist that switches from 80s eurodance to silence at 3am. if you get bored, the next city over is a 45-minute drive if you don’t mind driving through a forest of concrete and existential dread.

someone told me that the local bar has a beginners’ psychology class on tuesdays. arched eyebrows. i’m not sure if that’s a tip or a warning. the reviews here are all over the place. one creepy hostel sign said ‘free wifi if you promise not to take selfies with the sun’. another claimed the food court serves ‘exotic’ dishes but the only thing they had was a bowl of fast-drying algae. i heard that the downtown area has a hidden speakeasy where you need to solve a riddle to get in. probably fake, but it’s the kind of rumor that makes you want to wander around with a notebook.

the weather is weird. i mean, it’s 14.89 and no one’s wearing layers. maybe they’re just used to being damp. i tried to take a selfie by the beach but the waves looked like they were high-fiving the clouds. the thing about this place is that it’s not trying to be pretty. the streets are covered in mosaics of peeling paint and random art. one wall had a sketch of a snail wearing a top hat. i don’t know if it’s a real thing or just a tourist trap. either way, it’s not like anywhere else.

i asked a neighbor if they knew about the best coffee spots. they pointed me to a tiny shop called coffee (yes, that’s the name) where the barista kept talking about bventures and existential brew methods. i ordered a coffee and it tasted like regret. not the good kind, the i-regret-this-choice kind. maybe that’s the point.

p.s. if you’re gonna stay here long, check the ‘city life’ section on the local board. someone posted about a spontaneous jazz night last week. i’m skeptical but i’ll go. also, yelp says the beach is ‘a little chaotic but worth it’-don’t tell the actual locals that. another post mentioned a food truck that serves ‘mystery curry’ for pricey reasonable money. i’m skeptical again, but i’ll take the risk. hope it’s not just sweet potatoes and regret.

i just saw a sign for a yoga instructor who teaches under a streetlamp at 5am. seems legit? maybe. i didn’t ask much though. the vibe here is like a bad dream you can’t wake up from. you know you shouldn’t be here but you’re already stuck. if you leave, you’ll miss the part where the sun sets behind a building that looks like it belongs in a different country. or maybe that’s just my imagination.

sea during golden hour

a bird's eye view of a resort with a swimming pool

an aerial view of a golf course and a resort

p.p.s. someone tagged me in a tripadvisor review that said ‘great for solo travelers who enjoy silence and mystery’. i want to believe it. i also saw a local board post about a graffiti art project. if you’re a street artist or a total mess, this might be your spot. just don’t expect anything to make sense.
