Lost in Seoul: A Whirlwind of Temps and Textures

okay, so i ended up in seoul. like, really ended up. i’d originally planned a quick hop, but something about the air - or maybe the unusually specific number i keep seeing (1854093… is this a secret code? a forgotten phone number? honestly, who knows) - just pulled me in. and then there's the other number: 1392185480. it feels significant, like a timestamp on a memory i haven't lived yet.

The weather here is… well, it’s a weird one. i just checked and it’s hovering around 10.55 degrees Celsius, feels like 8.78. a bit crisp, but the humidity is clinging to you like a playful ghost - 43%. the pressure's normal, thankfully at 1024, and the ground level is a little higher than sea level, 1005. it’s that in-between season vibe, you know? not quite cold enough for heavy layers, not warm enough to feel truly bare. i’m wearing like five different things. survival mode, basically.

A tree-lined street in Seoul

first impressions? sensory overload in the best way. the streets bustle, a constant stream of people flowing around ancient temples and impossibly tall buildings. the smells! kimchi, street food i can’t even name, and a faint, pleasant woodsmoke. it’s a lot to take in.

my little Airbnb is tucked away in a neighborhood that feels like it hasn't changed much in decades. the neighbors are… quiet. polite nods, mostly. if you get bored, other parts of *South Korea are just a short train ride away. i peeked into a little market the other day, and it was overflowing with things i didn’t understand but desperately wanted to buy. got a fantastic deal on some oddly shaped tea cups.

gear-ish (because i’m a bit of a mess when i travel):
comfortable shoes - seriously, you’ll walk forever
power bank - essential. my phone dies faster than a houseplant in my care.
a good phrasebook - even if you just learn "thank you" and "where is the bathroom?"
a reusable water bottle - ditch the plastic, okay?

A street scene in Seoul

heard a rumor at a little cafe - someone told me that the best bibimbap in the city is hidden down a tiny alleyway near
Gyeongbokgung Palace. apparently, it’s a hole-in-the-wall place that doesn’t even have a menu. i'm planning to investigate. also, someone else mentioned that the public transportation system is a bit of a maze at first. might be worth downloading a subway map app. just a heads-up.

“Don’t be afraid to get lost. That’s where the real discoveries happen.” - someone i overheard chatting at a coffee shop.

A building in Seoul

been wandering around
Myeongdong* - the shopping district - and it’s insane. flashing lights, K-pop blasting from every storefront, and the sheer energy of the crowds is exhilarating. i'm trying to embrace the chaos, but honestly, my brain feels like it’s trying to process too much information at once. maybe a quiet tea break is in order.

also, a local warned me - keep an eye on your belongings. petty theft is apparently a thing, especially in crowded areas. just being mindful, obviously.

this city is a beautiful mess. a whirlwind of old and new, tradition and modernity. i’m not sure how long i’ll stay, but i have a feeling this is just the beginning of a really interesting story. and i definitely need to figure out what that number 1854093 means. maybe it’s the universe trying to tell me something.

if you're planning a trip, check out TripAdvisor's Seoul guide for ideas. and for some yummy eats, look at Yelp's Seoul restaurants. it's a fascinating place. i'm off to find that bibimbap!
