Lisbon: Lost in the Echoes of 3394661 & 1076020210

okay, so lisbon. what even is lisbon? it’s… a sensory overload in the best possible way. i’m pretty sure the air here is thick with the scent of grilled sardines and something vaguely floral, maybe jasmine? and definitely the salty tang of the *Tagus River. i came here chasing a rumour, a whisper really, connected to those two numbers - 3394661 and 1076020210. no idea what they mean, but let’s just say they led me down some seriously interesting rabbit holes.

temp is a balmy 26.29, feels like the same, humidity is clinging to you like a second skin - 96% - it’s that kind of heat where you’re constantly wiping sweat, yet you're still craving ice cream. the locals are… well, they’re
present. a lot of eyes, a lot of stories etched on faces that’ve seen a thing or two. i’m not gonna lie, some of them give you a look like you’re completely clueless, which, honestly, isn’t far from the truth half the time. i glanced over into Alfama and it felt timeless. like someone just stepped out of a black and white movie.

i’m staying in a tiny guesthouse in
Bairro Alto. it's a maze of cobbled streets, and getting lost is practically a requirement. which is fine by me. i've decided to lean into the disorientation. embraced it, even. it’s the only way to truly discover anything.

i spent yesterday wandering, just letting the streets guide me. stumbled upon a little fado house tucked away down an alley - the music was haunting, the voices raw. someone told me that the best fado isn't found on TripAdvisor; it's found in the dimly lit corners, places tourists don't bother to look.

and the food? oh god, the food. i’ve been living on pastel de nata and fresh seafood. seriously, i'm pretty sure i’m 50% custard at this point. i overheard a couple arguing at a tiny tasca that the secret to a good pastel de nata is all in the egg yolks - allegedly, they use eggs from free-range hens fed only on organic figs. it was a serious debate.

i’m definitely not a history nerd, but there’s just so much
history here, layered on top of itself. you can feel it in the stone walls, in the weathered tiles, in the echoes of ancient legends. i’m planning a trip to Sintra next week - apparently it’s overflowing with palaces and castles that look straight out of a fairy tale. but honestly, i’m just as happy getting gloriously lost in Lisbon’s present.

the neighbors… well, they’re a mix. young artists, old fishermen, families bustling about. it's a wonderfully chaotic blend. if you get bored, the
Algarve is just a short ride away, but honestly, i don't think i want* to be bored. i'm getting my kicks from the little discoveries, the unexpected turns, the feeling of being completely off-script. it's pretty liberating.

i'm thinking of trying to capture some of this energy through my photography. i’m using a vintage film camera, it feels more…authentic. and i’m ditching the itinerary. that’s the whole point, right? to see where the numbers take you.

really, this place feels like a dream - a slightly blurry, slightly chaotic dream, but a dream nonetheless. i'll let you know what the numbers reveal...if they reveal anything at all. you can find more tips on traveling on a budget at Nomadic Matt.
