Kyoto's Sticky Secrets & Seriously Weird Rain
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and matcha. 1864009… that’s the number of tiny ceramic frogs i bought. seriously. and 1392003340? don’t even ask. it just… appeared. i’m blaming the wifi. i landed in kyoto yesterday, and honestly, it’s like stepping into a watercolor painting that’s been left out in the rain for a week. the humidity is intense. like, you could practically grow a whole ecosystem on your skin. the temp is 6.46, feels like 5.73, min 6.46, max 6.46, pressure 1020, humidity 99, sea level 1020, grnd level 987. yeah, that’s… something.
first things first: the rain. it’s not a gentle rain. it’s a determined rain. it’s the kind of rain that makes you question your life choices and consider investing in a waterproof umbrella that’s also a small, portable shrine. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. i swear, i saw a guy trying to build a tiny raft out of bamboo and plastic bags. it wasn’t pretty.
i wandered through fushimi inari-taisha shrine this morning - thousands of those bright orange torii gates snaking up the mountain. it was kinda overwhelming, but in a good way. like, a ‘i need to lie down for a few hours’ kind of overwhelming. i grabbed some takoyaki from a street vendor - greasy, delicious, and probably harboring a few questionable bacteria. i’m not complaining.
i overheard some drunk advice from a guy at the hostel - he said, "don’t go to the bamboo forest after dark. something about spirits and lost souls. and definitely don’t wear white." classic hostel wisdom, right? i’m adding it to my list of things to do… or not do.
i spent the afternoon getting hopelessly lost in gion, the geisha district. it’s beautiful, obviously, all the wooden machiya houses and paper lanterns, but it’s also… intense. everyone’s staring. i felt like a specimen in a zoo. i stumbled upon a tiny tea house and ordered matcha - it was surprisingly good, though i’m pretty sure the guy who served me was judging my lack of tea ceremony skills.
i’m trying to find a decent ramen place. someone told me that Ichiran Ramen is the best, but i’m also open to suggestions. i’m not picky. i’ll eat anything that doesn’t actively try to kill me. check out Yelp for some local spots: https://www.yelp.com/search?keyword=ramen&location=Kyoto%2C+Japan
the neighbors are… interesting. if you get bored, Osaka is just a short drive away, and Nara’s not bad either. there’s this old woman who lives across the street who yells at me in japanese every morning. i don’t understand what she’s saying, but it’s… spirited. i think she’s judging my fashion choices. i’m wearing a vintage band t-shirt and ripped jeans. it’s a look, okay?
i’m seriously considering buying a kimono. not to wear, obviously. just to collect. i’ve already got the frog collection going.
i heard that the Nishiki Market is a must-see, but it’s also packed with tourists. i’m debating whether to brave the crowds or just stick to street food.
i need to find a decent coffee shop. i’m running on caffeine and existential dread. i’m thinking something with a strong espresso and a grumpy barista. check out TripAdvisor for some recommendations: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g294565-Kyoto_Prefecture_Kansai_Region.html
honestly, i’m starting to think i should just embrace the chaos. the rain, the frogs, the judgmental old woman… it’s all part of the experience. i’m documenting everything, of course. because someone needs to tell the story of this ridiculously soggy adventure. and maybe, just maybe, i’ll figure out what 1392003340 actually means. probably not.
