kyoto's quiet corners: a digital nomad's messy walk through rain-soaked alleys

@Topiclo Admin3/26/2026blog

i started this post with coffee in one hand and a broken umbrella in the other. the one i got from that sketchy street vendor near the train station. it lasted ten minutes before the handle snapped. classic. anyway, it’s 13.42°C here right now, which means i’m wearing three layers and questioning all life choices. but hey, the rain’s been a blessing for the street food stalls. everyone’s splashing into the puddles and the air smells like tempura and hope.

so, first off-cloudyness. big one. not the fluffy kind where you pretend you’re in a Miyazaki film. this is the ‘i need to find an indoor bathroom before i freeze’ kind. someone told me that the tokyo subway connects here, which is either a blessing or a curse depending on how much i want to spend an hour avoiding people. i went with the blessing. walking got tedious, honestly. also, the fan in my hostel room is louder than a chainsaw. i’m considering playing loud lo-fi jazz to compete. maybe.

the locals here are, uh… unique. i overheard two old women arguing about a squirrel that had pooped on their gravestone. classic. if you’re wandering around and feel alone, don’t worry. the alleys are tied to some weird subculture. i saw a guy painting a giant anime cat on a dumpster. his phone was dead, so he used glow sticks. brilliant. i’m debating painting my face with confetti next time.

ok, about the reviews. i heard that the sushi place near the geisha district is cursed. locals say the fish tastes like regret. i went anyway. it was… fine. maybe the curse is just the price. 1500 yen for a roll? overpriced. i also heard that the onsen place on this street has a raccoon that steals your towel. i’m not sure if that’s true. i didn’t see it, but i did see a guy pretending to fight it with a tiny sword. maybe he was the owner.

gear tips? i carry everything in a duffel because i’m a chaotic human. my phone’s battery died twice, but i charged it at that café by the shrine. the one with the vending machine that sells matcha-flavored concoctions. yelp says it’s ‘a cult hangout’-whatever that means. i’m a budget student, so i’m all about cults. at least they have free Wi-Fi.

the weather here is like a drama queen. it rained all morning, then stopped for a bit, then started again while i was buying tamagoyaki. the temperature swings are brutal. i checked synonyms for ‘chilly’ like 20 times and settled on ‘not-hot.’ the locals don’t use fancy words, so why should i?

neighbors? well, the building next door has a ukulele player who practices at 3 a.m. sometimes. i heard him last night. it’s not creepy, just… oddly sincere. he’s Trying. i respect that. if you’re stuck here at night, knock on his door. he’ll probably let you crash. he once let a moth fly into his hair and didn’t notice for ten minutes. charm.

i grabbed some photos from unsplash because why not? [first image], [second image], [third image]. the third one is of a house with a porch that looks like it belongs in a timber mill. solid aesthetic. the first one is a giant building with a tree. maybe that’s a metaphor for bureaucracy? who knows. the second is a forest path. i walked that one once. it led to a temple, which was closed. probably for good reasons.

if you get bored, the countryside is just a short drive away. but don’t listen to the map app. it suggested a 45-minute drive to a field of rice paddies. i drove 10 minutes and got lost in a parking lot. i found a weird shrine though. the one with the giant torii gate made of bike chains. it’s bizarre. the guy there sold me a charm for 200 yen that supposedly brings good luck… if you drink soy sauce while wearing it. i’m skeptical.

links? sure. tripadvisor for the obvious. yelp if you want to hate a place before you even go. and kyoto-localboards for that niche vibe. i also found a good one for indie film scouts. it’s called ‘muplugins’-not sure why.

in conclusion? this place is a mosaic of weirdness. the rain, the weird neighbors, the cursed sushi-it all adds up. i’m already planning my next move, which might involve a skateboard or a yoga mat. either way, i’ll be writing about it here. probably under a different persona. maybe as a ghost hunter. who knows? i’m sleep-deprived and creative. that’s my superpower.
