Kyoto Chaos: Lost in Translation (and Matcha Latte Steam)
okay, so i'm still processing *Kyoto. seriously, this place is a beautiful, bewildering mess. i landed here after what felt like a solid 18 hours of travel, and the air… it’s thick. humid, but in a way that feels… alive? i just checked and it’s… a gentle warmth, clinging to everything, hope you like that kind of thing. the pressure is 1001, humidity is 54%, so definitely pack light, but also, like, expect to sweat.
i came here chasing a feeling, an elusive sense of something. i wasn't sure what. maybe it was the promise of ancient temples and meticulously raked gardens. maybe it was just desperately needing a change of scenery after staring at a screen for far too long. (anyone else feel that?)
first impressions? overwhelming. the streets are a maze - tiny alleyways crammed with shops selling everything from handcrafted ceramics to incredibly weird pickled vegetables. the locals are polite, but mostly speak a language that sounds like wind chimes arguing. i’m relying heavily on google translate and frantic gesturing. and let’s just say my attempts at Japanese are… rudimentary.
i checked into this little guesthouse near Gion. it's incredibly charming, all sliding doors and tatami mats, but the bathroom situation is… interesting. very minimalist. i Heard that someone told me the plumbing in some of these places can be rustic. whoa.
the weather report is showing pretty consistent temperatures, which is a relief. The forecast suggests fairly mild conditions throughout my stay, so I'm hoping for some pleasant days to explore.
my days have been a blur of temples, shrines, and trying to navigate the public transport system (seriously, it's an adventure in itself). i went to Fushimi Inari Shrine and hiked through those thousands of vermillion torii gates. it was breathtaking, but also seriously a workout. my legs are screaming. someone warned me about the crowds there, especially on weekends. seems entirely justified.
i've been wandering around Nishiki Market, a sensory overload of sights, smells and tastes. i tried some pickled plums that tasted like pure regret, and some melt-in-your-mouth wagyu beef that made me question all my life choices. i just checked and it's... full of people, hawking everything. if you get bored, Osaka is just a short train ride away for more culinary adventures.
food-wise, i'm quickly realizing that i have no* idea what i'm doing. i’ve accidentally ordered things that look suspiciously like animal parts. but hey, that's part of the experience, right? i found a surprisingly decent ramen place tucked away on a side street - a tiny place with only five seats. the chef looked like he’d been perfecting his broth for 40 years. i'm also eyeing a matcha latte every morning. it's becoming a serious addiction.
the neighbors here are… quiet. mostly just the gentle sounds of a city waking up. occasional temple bells, the murmur of conversations in a language i don't understand. mostly it's just a feeling of being completely removed from everything i know. which, honestly, is exactly what i needed.
i’m rambling, i know. but this place… it’s getting under my skin. it's messy and chaotic, but also profoundly beautiful. i'm hoping to spend a few more days here, getting lost in the streets and soaking up the atmosphere. i heard that a local artist mentioned that the true beauty of Kyoto isn’t in the temples or the gardens, but in the hidden moments, the fleeting glimpses of everyday life. i’m trying to be open to those moments. any tips? let me know in the comments!
