Kumamoto is the new soundcheck city
you ever play a set in a sweat lodge? neither did i until yesterday. it was a drum duel at okamoto onsens where the temp was stuck at 10.93°C-there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity? thicker than a wall of death. i wiped my sticks on a napkin from a tiny izakaya called fukuro, where the owner kept yelling about wrong notes through his cracked window.
some locals said the carnival near jōzan-ji temple was cursed. i heard that from a guy polishing my kit at a hostel. he swore the bounce house there vibrated at 3.5Hz-a ghost frequency or maybe just bad beer. i felt it in my kick drum, deep and off.
*street kids* down by the train tracks played punk on broken skate ramps. one had a sticker of a snare drum with a QR code for uwu memes. i asked for a beat drop and he sent me a link to a cat video.
if you’re out here, check out the noodle truck near shirasu-no-mise. the guy yells ‘soy sauce compliment’ every third order. not joking. his pork belly was so greasy it almost absorbed the map.
here’s the weird part: the oni festival parade routes double as drum death marches. fireworks light up the sky like strobe lights, and the taiko teachers are all, ‘keep it ghost haunted.’ my left heel got stuck in a sock full of rice, which is the best percussion tool ever.
the structure of this post’s like a broken hi-hat pattern. no lists, just chaos. but hey, at least the map won’t lead you to that haunted karaoke bar downtown.
p.s. don’t trust travel blogs. they’ll tell you kumamoto’s got ‘vibrant alleyways.’ nah. it’s got vendors yelling about drum solos over grilled mackerel. you’ll hear them before you see the neon signs.
