Kostrzyn nad Odrą: A Weird Little Corner of Poland I Never Planned to Visit

so there i was, freezing my ass off in kostrzyn nad odrą, a town i couldn't even pronounce when i bought the bus ticket. the numbers 7532956 and 1616143097 meant nothing to me then, but now they're burned into my memory like a bad tattoo. the weather was brutal-temp -1.1°C, feels like -3.78°C, humidity 70%, pressure 1028. basically, it was the kind of cold that makes your snot freeze before it hits the ground. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

i rolled into town with nothing but a backpack and a vague plan to "see some stuff." the first thing i noticed was how quiet it was. like, weirdly quiet. i asked a guy at a bakery if this was normal, and he just shrugged and said, "it's tuesday." fair enough.

if you get bored, gorzów wielkopolski and zielona góra are just a short drive away, but honestly, kostrzyn has its own weird charm. the old town square is tiny but packed with character-there's a fountain that doesn't work, a statue of some guy i've never heard of, and a coffee shop that smells like burnt toast and nostalgia. i heard from a local that the coffee shop used to be a secret meeting spot for artists in the 90s. or maybe that's just drunk advice-hard to tell.

i spent an afternoon wandering the odra river waterfront. it was so cold my phone died, but the view was worth it. someone told me that the river freezes solid some winters and people ice skate on it. i didn't see any skaters, but i did see a guy in a neon orange jumpsuit fishing through a hole in the ice. he looked miserable, but also kind of zen.

food-wise, i survived on pierogi and kielbasa from a place called "bar mleczny," which i think translates to "milk bar." it's not fancy, but it's cheap and filling. someone warned me that the bathrooms there are...questionable. i took my chances and lived to tell the tale.

one night, i ended up at a tiny pub where the bartender kept pouring me shots of something that tasted like cough syrup. i asked what it was, and he just laughed and said, "polish tradition." i woke up the next morning with a hangover and a new friend who insisted on showing me his collection of vintage postcards. weird? yes. memorable? absolutely.

kostrzyn isn't for everyone. it's not got the glamour of wrocław or the buzz of poznań. but if you're into offbeat, under-the-radar places where you can freeze your butt off and still have a good time, it's worth a stop. just bring a good coat and an open mind.
