Jaipur's Dust and Dreams: A Botanist's Unexpected Detour
okay, so. jaipur. i wasn’t supposed to be in jaipur. i was tracking a rare species of desert succulent in Rajasthan, you know, the kind that blooms only under a specific lunar cycle? Turns out, the lunar cycle was a liar. Or maybe my research was. Either way, i ended up here, a little lost, a lot sweaty, and surrounded by more pink buildings than i ever thought possible.
I just checked and it's…a sort of hazy warmth right now. Like being wrapped in a slightly damp, terracotta blanket. Not unpleasant, just…present. The air smells like spices and exhaust fumes, a surprisingly compelling combination. I’m staying in a little guesthouse near *Tripolia Bazaar, which is…an experience. Let’s just say the plumbing is…characterful.
I’ve been wandering around, mostly aimlessly, sketching plants in my notebook. The botanical diversity here is fascinating, even if it’s not the specific succulent I came for. There’s this incredible resilience in the vegetation, clinging to life in the cracks of the pavement, bursting from abandoned buildings. It’s inspiring, honestly. I’m trying to capture it all before my sketchbook fills up with dust and frustrated doodles.
Someone told me that the City Palace is a must-see, but honestly, the crowds sounded…intense. I’d rather spend an afternoon observing a single, tenacious weed pushing through concrete. Plus, I’m on a botanist’s budget, not a royal tour budget. I did peek in, though. It’s…pink. Very pink.
I overheard some serious gossip at a chai stall yesterday. Apparently, the best lassi in the city is at a place called Lassi Wala, but you have to go before noon or you’ll be fighting a horde of tourists. Drunk advice, probably, but i’m willing to risk it. I’m also hearing whispers about a hidden garden somewhere near Amber Fort. A local warned me it’s “not for tourists,” which, naturally, makes me want to find it even more. I’m thinking of checking out TripAdvisor to see if anyone else has mentioned it.
If you get bored, Udaipur and Jodhpur* are just a short drive away. I might head that direction if this succulent hunt proves to be a complete bust. I’m also considering checking out Yelp for some decent vegetarian food. My stomach is starting to rumble.
I’ve been trying to document everything, not just the plants. The sounds, the smells, the sheer chaos of it all. It’s a sensory overload, but in a good way. I’m thinking of starting a little online journal, maybe on this local board. Just a place to share my observations and maybe connect with other plant nerds.
Right now, I’m sitting on a rooftop, watching the sunset paint the pink buildings in even more vibrant hues. It’s…unexpectedly beautiful. And i’m still searching for that elusive succulent. Maybe tomorrow. Or maybe i’ll just embrace the chaos and explore a different corner of this incredible city. I’m also looking at this travel blog for some more ideas.
It's a good kind of lost, you know?
