Hyderabad Heat & Hyderabadi Hustle: A Botanist's Bewilderment
okay, so. hyderabad. wow. i’m still peeling the humidity off my skin, honestly. i just checked and it's simmering like a forgotten pot of chai - twenty-seven point five-something degrees, feels like twenty-eight. pressure’s at a hundred and nine, which apparently means… something? i don’t know, i’m a plant person, not a meteorologist.
I came here chasing rumors of some seriously ancient, almost mythical, plant life. Apparently, there’s a whole ecosystem tucked away in the *Charminar area that’s been largely ignored by, well, everyone except a few eccentric local botanists. I’m hoping to document it, maybe even find something new. My grant depends on it, and my landlord is not understanding my current level of ‘struggling artist’ vibes.
I’m staying in Nampally, which is… an experience. The noise is constant. Motorbikes, vendors shouting, someone practicing the sitar at an ungodly hour. It’s a sensory overload, but in a strangely invigorating way. If you get bored, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam are just a hop, skip, and a prayer away. I’m trying to find some quiet corners to sketch, but it’s proving difficult.
Someone told me that the Laad Bazaar is a must-see, especially for textiles. Apparently, you can find incredible embroidery and silks, but be prepared to haggle. Like, really haggle. I’m terrible at that. I ended up paying way too much for a scarf that probably cost next to nothing. My bank account is weeping.
I spent a good chunk of yesterday wandering around Salar Jung Museum. It’s… a lot. So much history, so many artifacts. I got completely lost in the textile collection, naturally. Found a few interesting dye techniques I want to research. It’s a good place to escape the heat, too, which is a major bonus. Check out their website: https://www.salarsjungmuseum.ap.gov.in/
“Don’t trust the auto drivers near the Golconda Fort,” a very drunk man advised me at a roadside stall. “They’ll take you in circles and charge you double. Walk if you can.”
He wasn’t wrong. I learned that the hard way.
I’ve been trying to find some decent coffee. It’s… challenging. I’m used to single-origin pour-overs and meticulously roasted beans. Here, it’s mostly instant. I did find one place that claims to have a “latte,” but it tasted suspiciously like milky tea. I’m starting to miss my espresso machine. Maybe I should just invest in a portable one.
My current obsession is the vegetation growing on the Charminar itself. It’s a bizarre mix of mosses, lichens, and some kind of tenacious vine. I’m trying to identify it all. It’s a testament to the resilience of life, really. Even in the middle of a bustling city, nature finds a way. I’m documenting everything I can. I’ve been posting some preliminary sketches on my Instagram - @botanicalramblings - if you’re interested.
I also stumbled upon a local board online where people are discussing the best places to find rare spices. Apparently, there’s a hidden market somewhere in the Old City that’s worth checking out. I’m going to try to find it tomorrow. https://www.hyderabadlocal.com/
“The biryani is good everywhere, but the best is at [Restaurant Name],” a woman selling flowers told me. “Just don’t ask for extra spice unless you really mean it.”
I’m taking that as a warning. I’m not a fan of setting my mouth on fire. I’m also looking for recommendations on Yelp: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=biryani&find_loc=Hyderabad%2C+Telangana%2C+India
Honestly, Hyderabad is chaotic, overwhelming, and utterly captivating. It’s not exactly relaxing, but it’s definitely… something. I’m exhausted, covered in dust, and slightly terrified, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Except maybe a decent cup of coffee.
Oh, and one last thing: someone overheard me talking about plants and told me to check out the Botanical Garden in Kothaguda*. Apparently, it’s a hidden gem. https://www.telanganaforest.gov.in/
Wish me luck. I’m going to need it.
