Homs, Syria - The City That Still Sings

homs... i never planned to end up here, but that's travel for you, right? one minute you're in beirut, next you're in a shared taxi heading east, watching the hills blur into memory. the city smells like grilled meat, diesel, and something sweet i can't place. people here smile slow, like they've got nowhere to be. the weather's a cool 13.6°c but feels like 12.7°c, so yeah, bring a light jacket if you're walking around. i just checked and it's breezy and overcast there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

"Homs used to be the heart of the revolution," a guy told me at a cafe. "now it's just... tired. but alive."

walking through the old souk, i overheard someone say the clock tower is the only thing that survived the war untouched. i don't know if that's true, but it's the kind of rumor that sticks. someone told me that the best falafel in town is at a place called abu haitham, no sign, just follow the smell. i did, and yeah, it's legit.

if you get bored, tartus and palmyra are just a short drive away. but honestly, homs doesn't need a backup plan. it's got crumbling walls that tell better stories than any museum. i sat by the orontes river at sunset, and a kid tried to sell me a plastic bird that whistled when you poured water through it. i bought it. still don't know why.

people here don't talk politics much. they talk about bread prices, soccer, and whether the electricity will stay on. normal stuff. normal people. the kind of normal you forget exists until you're sitting in a room with them, sharing tea and silence.

if you're looking for a "vibrant" city, keep scrolling. but if you want real, unfiltered, slightly broken beauty, homs is waiting. and yeah, it's got its ghosts. but it's also got kids playing in the streets, old men playing backgammon, and a falafel shop that'll ruin you for life.

check out TripAdvisor's Homs guide if you want the tourist version. but honestly? just show up. talk to people. eat the food. listen.
