holland, michigan: tulips, wind, and a weird little secret
so i found myself in holland, michigan, because someone told me the tulips were insane and i needed a break from my usual grind. turns out, they weren't lying. the fields were like someone spilled a giant bag of skittles across the landscape. windmills spinning lazily in the background, people posing for photos like it's their job, and me just trying not to step on the flowers because i'm clumsy like that.
i just checked the weather and it's 5.73°c right now, feels like 3°c, and the humidity is at 96%. basically, it's damp and chilly, but the tulips don't seem to mind. if you're into that kind of thing, bring a jacket and maybe a thermos of something warm.
"you haven't seen holland until you've seen the tulips at dawn,"
said a local i met at a coffee shop. i didn't make it for dawn, but i did catch the sunset, and it was pretty magical. the sky turned this soft pink, and the windmills looked like they were glowing.
if you get bored, grand rapids and kalamazoo are just a short drive away. grand rapids has this cool art scene, and kalamazoo is weirdly charming in a small-town way. i heard someone say the breweries in grand rapids are worth the trip alone, but i'm more of a coffee person myself.
i stopped by *de boer's for brunch, and let me tell you, their dutch pancakes are something else. fluffy, buttery, and just the right amount of sweet. someone told me that alma's kitchen* is the spot for dinner, but i didn't make it there. next time, maybe.
and here's the weird little secret: there's this tiny alleyway near the downtown area that's covered in murals. i stumbled on it by accident while trying to find a bathroom. it's not on any map, and it's easy to miss, but it's worth the detour. someone said it's where local artists go to practice without getting in trouble, but who knows.
anyway, holland is one of those places that's easy to underestimate. it's not flashy, but it's got this quiet charm that sneaks up on you. if you're into tulips, windmills, and a little bit of weirdness, it's worth a visit.
