Harrisburg: When the Weather's Colder Than My College Debt

okay so i ended up in harrisburg this weekend because my bus ticket was cheaper than a pizza slice. turns out the weather's... there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. it’s one of those damp colds that makes your socks feel soggy even when they’re dry. humidity’s at 91% which is basically breathing soup.

the city’s got this weird energy like it’s trying too hard to be normal. if you get bored, lancaster and york are both a short drive away but honestly they’re not much better. spent most of my time walking around like a lost goose because my phone died. saw this building that looked important but it was just a post office - shocker.

yo man, skip that mexican place on third street. my cousin’s friend’s uncle got food poisoning there twice. twice!

that coffee shop by the river? they’ll charge you $8 for a cup that tastes like regret. go to the gas station two blocks west instead. free refills if you look pathetic enough.

heard about this place called the state museum from a bartender who smelled like regret and gin. he swore the civil war exhibit was fire but then admitted he’d never actually gone. check it yourself if you’re into that sort of thing.

tried to be cultural and hit up the art gallery but it was basically a hallway with one painting of a sad horse. talked to this street vendor who claimed he’d seen a ghost in the tunnels under downtown. said it smelled like mothballs and existential dread. his full story’s on some local blog if you’re into that vibe.

the *riverfront’s kinda cool though, especially when the fog rolls in at night. feels like a horror movie set. saw some people kayaking which seemed masochistic in this weather. locals warned me about the pigeons downtown - apparently they’ll steal your sandwich if you blink wrong.

whatever you do, don’t eat at that diner near the bus station. my grandma says their hash browns are actually asphalt shingles painted brown.

so yeah. harrisburg’s fine if you’re into dampness and questionable street food. i’d rather be back in my dorm eating ramen but at least the
free museum* kept me dry for an hour. peace out, i’m going to try to wring my socks out.
