frankfurt after midnight: a digital nomad’s ramblings about coffee, ghosts, and terrible weather
i don’t know why i’m writing this at 2:17 am but here we go. woken up by a train screech outside my apartment and now i’m staring at a cup of burnt espresso while someone’s dog barks at the window. the city’s temperature is 7.67 degrees out there right now which is colder than i expected. i checked. i hope you’re not planning to wear shorts. if you are, you’ll freeze into a human popsicle. this place has a weird way of making you feel both tiny and swallowed at once.
i’ve heard that the old Tempelhof Airport is full of ghosts but i asked a local about it and they just said "dude if you believe in ghosts you’ll believe in my snoreless grandma." which is either a cop-out or profound wisdom. either way, i walked there at dusk and took this photo of an empty plane wall with a cat napping on it. seems peaceful.
this isn’t about ghosts though. it’s about the coffee. i found this tiny café called Schwarzer Kaffee where they serve espresso so strong it tastes like someone microwaved instant grounds. i spent 30 minutes trying to order in german and kept getting a croissant instead. a barista finally handed me a cup and said "we don’t do recipes here" which is either poetic or terrifying. the exact same thing has happened to me in three other cities. maybe it’s universal.
ok but back to the weather. feels like 7.04 degrees out there which is basically a cry for help from europe. someone once told me that if you get bored, heidelberg is just a short drive away. i asked why and they replied "because your soul needs more existential dread" which is either a compliment or a warning. i don’t know. the humidity is 70% which means my hair looks like a drowned rabbit. i swear the locals here communicate more through sighs than words. if you need directions, ask the old man near the U-Bahn station. he’ll point you somewhere and mutter something about "not trusting apps" while lighting a cigarette. sovereign advice.
nearby? the place is 1022 hPa pressure which is probably just the city being stubborn about its identity. there’s a yogurt shop three blocks from here called Yogomania that’s okay. i stole a selfie stick from them last week. it’s now on ebay.
someone on a review board said the bike rentals are haunted. i don’t know if this is true but the lock on mine broke after one use. a local warned me about a specific bridge saying "dont cross it at sunset or you’ll see things" which is either a metaphor or a real thing. i’ve never dared.
if you want to see more of this chaos, check out these links: https://www.tripadvisor.com/frankfurt, https://www.yelp.com/biz/schwarzer-kaffe-frankfurt, or https://www.unsplash.com/photos/berlin-street-art. don’t let the weather or the ghosts or the espresso ruin your trip. just bring extra socks and a willingness to question everything. i’ll be here tomorrow probably freezing while typing this. peace out.
