Erode Diaries: A Hot, Humid, and Honestly Confusing Day

woke up sweating. not because i was having a nightmare-because the humidity here in erode is no joke. 83% humidity. that’s not a number, that’s a lifestyle choice. the temp is hovering around 24°c, but feels like 24.3°c, which is basically the weather’s way of saying “don’t get too comfortable.” i just checked and it’s muggy as hell right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

i’m not even sure what day it is anymore. the streets here are a mix of auto-rickshaws, stray dogs, and people who look like they’ve been up since before sunrise. someone told me that the best filter coffee in town is at this tiny stall near brough road, but i haven’t found it yet. maybe it’s a myth. or maybe i’m just not awake enough to spot it.

anyway, if you get bored, coimbatore and salem are just a short drive away. not that you’d want to leave-unless you’re trying to escape the heat, in which case, good luck.

i overheard a local say that the weather’s been “unusual” this year. i asked what “unusual” meant. they just shrugged and said, “less rain, more sweat.” fair.

walking around, i noticed the air pressure is 1012, which sounds like something a meteorologist would panic about, but apparently it’s fine. the ground level pressure is 992, which i’m choosing to interpret as “the earth is hugging you a little tighter today.”

so far, i’ve seen more temples than i can count, and i’ve lost count of how many times i’ve been offered a banana. not complaining-bananas are great. but it’s a lot.

i keep thinking i should write something profound about the history here, but honestly, i’m too busy trying to stay hydrated. maybe tomorrow.

if you’re planning to visit, bring a hat. and maybe a portable fan. and low expectations for your hair.

oh, and here’s a map so you don’t end up like me, wandering in circles:

and because i haven’t uploaded my own photos yet (they’re all blurry from the humidity), here are some from unsplash:

for more on erode, check out tripadvisor or yelp. or just ask a local. they’ll probably tell you something useful after offering you a banana.
