Dust & Echoes: Lost in Porto’s Grey
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. like, seriously, i think my brain cells are staging a tiny protest. i just got back from Porto, and honestly? it’s… a lot. not in a good way, not like ‘wow, breathtaking sunsets’ kind of way. more like ‘a really intense, slightly unsettling feeling that i’m perpetually slightly out of sync.’
I was tracking the barometric pressure - 1007, apparently - and the humidity was a sticky 40%. felt like stepping into a sauna that hadn’t quite finished heating up. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the air was thick, you know? heavy with the smell of salt and something vaguely… metallic. like old coins.
I’m a touring session drummer, so my usual travel kit is basically a suitcase full of drumsticks and a vaguely terrified expression. this trip was mostly just wandering, though. i found this tiny little square, Ribeira, crammed with restaurants and shops, and it was a total sensory overload. the sounds - clanging pots, shouting vendors, mournful fado music spilling out of doorways - it was… a lot. i ended up just sitting at a cafe, nursing a galão (which, by the way, is basically a really strong, milky coffee - a godsend), and watching the boats drift along the Douro.
Someone told me that the Livraria Lello is worth the hype, but honestly, it felt like a tourist trap designed to induce mild panic. i’d rather just wander the back alleys and stumble upon something genuinely weird. i did find a street artist - a dude with a shaved head and a serious attitude - who was spray-painting murals on abandoned buildings. his work was… chaotic. lots of swirling blues and greens, vaguely nautical themes. it felt like he was trying to capture the feeling of the city itself - the grey, the damp, the slightly melancholic vibe.
I’m a freelance photographer, so i was snapping away like a maniac, trying to capture the essence of it all. it’s hard to describe. it’s not pretty, not in the conventional sense. it’s gritty, it’s weathered, it’s… real. i got some decent shots, though. definitely worth a look: https://www.example.com/porto-photos
I heard that the Francesinha sandwich is a must-try, but i was too overwhelmed to actually eat one. i did grab a pastel de nata from a bakery near the São Bento train station - those are legit. creamy, flaky, and ridiculously addictive. https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=pastéis%20de%20nata&sort_by=relevance
I spent an afternoon exploring the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art. it’s a bit outside the city center, but it’s worth the trek. the gardens are insane - huge, overgrown, and filled with sculptures. it felt like stepping into a forgotten fairytale. https://www.serralves.pt/en/
If you get bored, Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river, are just a short drive away. They’ve got some decent port wine cellars - you can do a tour and sample the stuff.
I’m a budget student, so i was mostly sticking to cheap eats and free activities. i found a great little market in the Mercado do Bolhão - it’s a bit rundown, but it’s full of local produce and street food. i grabbed a sandes de polvo (octopus sandwiches) - surprisingly good.
I’m a ghost hunter, and Porto has a reputation for being haunted. i spent one night wandering the streets of the Sé Cathedral, trying to pick up any residual energy. nothing major, just a few cold spots and a feeling of being watched.
Seriously, though, this place gets under your skin. it’s not a happy place, not in the traditional sense. but it’s got a certain… magnetism. a kind of quiet intensity. i’m not sure i’d go back, but i’ll definitely remember it.
