Dust & Echoes in Cartagena: A Slightly Broken Record
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. the humidity here is… intense. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 25.89 degrees, feels like 25.97, pressure 1010, humidity 55, sea level 1010, ground level 960. it’s a weird combination, honestly. like, you’re sweating through your t-shirt but also not feeling too bad about it. it’s… Cartagena.
I landed yesterday, and honestly, it’s a sensory overload. the colors are just… everything. like, someone threw a rainbow at a building and then decided to add a thousand more. i’m trying to document it all, but my camera roll is already screaming. i’m pretty sure i’ve taken 50 pictures of street art alone. it’s a problem.
Spent the morning wandering around the walled city. it’s a maze, a beautiful, crumbling, slightly terrifying maze. i got completely lost, which, let’s be real, is half the fun. i stumbled upon this tiny little courtyard with a fountain and a bunch of old men playing dominoes. it was… peaceful. a genuine pocket of calm in the chaos.
Someone told me that the best arepas are at La Cevicheria - seriously, go there. don’t even think about it, just go. I also heard that the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas is worth the climb, but you’ll need good shoes. like, really good shoes. I’m wearing my beat-up Converse, and they’re already regretting their life choices.
I’m staying in this Airbnb - it’s basically a converted colonial house. the owner, Ricardo, is a total character. he keeps leaving me these little hand-painted ceramic frogs. i have no idea why. it’s… charming, i guess? He also gave me this cryptic warning: "Beware the shadows of the Plaza de Bolívar after midnight." Seriously? I’m already questioning my life choices. Maybe I should just stick to the arepas.
Speaking of which, I need to find a decent coffee shop. my caffeine levels are hovering somewhere around ‘actively hallucinating.’ I’m looking for something strong, something dark, something that will slap me awake. I saw a place called Café de las Flores - apparently, they have amazing cold brew. I’ll check it out later.
I’m trying to capture the vibe, you know? the feeling of this place. it’s not just the pretty buildings and the colorful streets. it’s the sound of the music spilling out of the bars, the smell of spices in the air, the way the sunlight filters through the balconies. it’s… complicated. It’s like a half-remembered dream.
I’m thinking of hitting up the Getsemaní neighborhood tonight. it’s supposed to be the heart of the street art scene. I heard that the murals are constantly changing, so you always get something new. If you get bored, Barranquilla is just a short drive away. I’m also planning on checking out the Palacio de la Inquisición - apparently, it’s full of creepy artifacts and unsettling stories.
Here’s a quick gear list, because someone needs to keep track of this chaos:
Camera (obviously)
Notebook (for capturing the madness)
Sunscreen (seriously, the sun is brutal)
Hat (to shield my face from the sun)
Comfortable shoes (for all the walking)
Bug spray (the mosquitos are vicious)
* A healthy dose of skepticism
And a backup battery. always a backup battery.
I’m going to head out and explore. wish me luck. and maybe send coffee. seriously, send coffee. Check out TripAdvisor for some more recommendations: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ And Yelp for the best arepas: https://www.yelp.com/

Okay, that’s it for now. I need to go find some shade and contemplate the meaning of ceramic frogs.
