Cusco Chaos: Lost in the Andes (and Maybe My Mind)

okay, so let's talk *Cusco. i landed here with a vague plan and a whole lot of caffeine. the numbers i saw - 233346 and 1800406007 - popped up oddly on a hostel booking site, and honestly, it felt like a sign. or maybe just a glitch. the weather? i just checked and it's... crisp, with a sun that’s determined to peek through. feels like a constant oscillation between sunshine and the threat of rain. temp:28.19, feels_like:27.39. grnd_level:888. weirdly grounding.

this place is… intense. the energy is thick, like you can almost taste the history. the locals are… warm. in a way that’s both welcoming and intensely observant. they see everything.

spent the first day just wandering the
Plaza de Armas. it's beautiful, obviously, but the sheer number of tourists is… something. i’m sticking to the back alleys, trying to find the quieter corners. i found a little cafe tucked away, serving up surprisingly good mate de coca - definitely helps with the altitude. someone told me that the best view of the city is from that little cafe on Calle San Plácido - apparently, it’s a local secret.

Gear List (because, let’s be real, I’m a little paranoid):

*Hiking boots: essential. seriously. don't even think about it otherwise.
*Layers: it's unpredictable here. think t-shirts, sweaters, a light jacket, and maybe even a hat.
*Water bottle: stay hydrated! altitude sickness is no joke.
*Sunscreen: the sun is strong, even when it's cloudy.
*A good book: for those moments when you just want to sit and soak it all in.
*A phrasebook: my spanish is… rudimentary.

Overheard Gossip:

“Don't trust the guy selling the alpaca wool. It's all imitation.”

“The best cuy (guinea pig) in town is at El Mercado de San Pedro, but be prepared for a wait.”

“If you're looking for authentic music, head to the bar near the Mercado Central after dark.”

i’m trying to embrace the chaos, you know? ditch the rigid itinerary and just
be here. i even considered taking a day trip to Sacred Valley - lots of folks on TripAdvisor rave about the ruins there. TripAdvisor has tons of info. but honestly? i just want to get lost. i heard that the Rainbow Mountain trek is amazing, but it’s a full-day commitment. maybe next time. this whole experience makes me miss my old skateboarding days, but in a good way.

the
neighbors here are a mixed bag - some are incredibly friendly, others are a little distant. but there’s a resilience here, a deep connection to the land that’s really striking. i’m thinking about checking out some of the local artisan shops - i've heard the weavings are incredible. check out Yelp for some recommendations.

and the food! oh god, the food. i spilled a little
aji amarillo on my shirt yesterday - a local warned me that stuff is potent*. it burns. but it’s delicious. i'm thinking about taking a cooking class - there are a few places listed on CookingClass.com.pe.

this place is… well, it's a lot. a beautiful, noisy, overwhelming lot. and i wouldn't trade it for anything.
