Chasing Shadows in the Alps: A Solo Trek Through the Mist

so here i am, halfway up a mountain i can’t even pronounce, boots soaked through, fingers numb, and wondering if this whole “adventure” thing was a terrible idea. the trail markers have vanished, the sun’s playing hide-and-seek behind clouds that look like they’re about to burst, and my phone’s telling me it’s 12.75°C but feels like 11.52°C. great. i’m basically a human popsicle with a backpack.

i just checked and it’s damp, chilly, and suspiciously quiet up here-hope you like that kind of thing if you’re planning to follow in my soggy footsteps.

anyway, i met this guy at the base of the trail yesterday-total stranger, looked like he’d been living off trail mix and regret for weeks. he told me, “you gotta see the glacier before it’s gone, man. it’s like watching a slow-motion breakup.” so here i am, chasing ice that’s probably already melted by now.

Alpine trail winding through mist

i heard from a barista in town that the locals call this stretch “the weeping valley” because the wind literally sounds like it’s sobbing. charming. also, someone told me the cheese up here tastes like regret and old socks-i haven’t tried it yet, but i’m not ruling it out.

if you get bored, zurich and lucerne are just a short drive away, but honestly? once you’re up here, nothing else matters except not falling off a cliff.

“Don’t trust the signs after the third switchback,” a fellow hiker muttered. “They’re more like suggestions.”

i brought way too much gear-like, enough to survive a zombie apocalypse-but forgot the one thing that actually matters: a decent rain jacket. pro tip: *always bring a decent rain jacket. also, never trust a mountain that looks friendly. they’re all liars.

Glacier peeking through clouds

right now i’m sitting on a rock that’s probably older than my great-grandparents, eating a protein bar that tastes like sweetened sadness, and wondering if i’ll make it back before dark. the view’s incredible, though. or maybe that’s just the altitude talking.

for more trail info, check out
AllTrails* or ask the guy at the gear shop who looks like he’s never seen the sun. he’ll probably tell you the same thing: “you’re not prepared, but go anyway.”

anyway, that’s the update from the edge of nowhere. if you don’t hear from me again, assume i’ve become one with the mountain. or i just got really, really lost.
