chasing light in pereira: a photographer's messy diary

i rolled into pereira on a squeaky bus, camera slung low, hoping the light would cooperate. the morning air clung at 16.5°c, feels like a muggy blanket, hope you enjoy this sort of damp chill. i wandered toward *plaza bolivar, where old men played dominoes under the shade of a ceiba tree. someone told me that the best empanadas are hidden behind the stall with the red awning, but I heard that the line moves slower than a sunday sermon.

i snapped a few frames of the market stalls, the colors popping like overexposed film.

later, i ducked into
café san alberto for a cortado that tasted like burnt caramel and regret. the barista, a kid with a tattoo of a coffee bean, whispered that the new roast is "something a local warned me about" - apparently it’s too acidic for the afternoon crowd. i laughed, thanked him, and headed uphill toward cerro de las tres cruces, where the view sweeps over the valley like a wide‑angle lens.

if you’ve had enough of the town’s slow hum, manizales and armenia are just a short hop away. i overheard a drunk traveler at the hostel saying, "I heard that the night bus to bogota leaves at midnight and smells like regret." i didn’t verify, but it made a good story for the roll.

before calling it a day, i checked the TripAdvisor page for
pereira - TripAdvisor - and saw a Yelp review praising the street art alleys - Yelp. also skimmed a local board about upcoming festivals - Peria Blog. the humidity clung at 91%, making my lens fog up every few minutes, but that’s part of the charm, right? always carry a lens cloth*.

now i’m back at the hostel, reviewing shots, the numbers 3686793 and 1170193964 scribbled on a napkin - maybe coordinates for the next stop, maybe just doodles. either way, pereira left me with a memory card full of imperfect frames and a craving for more road.
