Cebu's Wet Walls: My Life as a Sleep-Deprived Street Artist

i landed in cebu and the humidity wrapped around me like a wet towel left in the gym bag. 25.22°c on the dot, feels like 25.86, so basically, it's warm and sticky. humidity at 79% means nothing dries fast-my sketches warp, my phone screen fogs up, and i'm constantly wiping my brow. perfect conditions for a street artist, right? not really, but it's home now.

"beware the neighborhood watch groups," a veteran spray can wizard warned me over san miguel. "they patrol at 2am with flashlights and tempers."

i've been mapping out walls for weeks. colon street is a goldmine, but the cops are hip. you need to move fast and light. i read on tripadvisor that the heritage walk is boring if you're into old churches, but i use it to scope out corners. [https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g298573-d1234567-Reviews-Heritage_Walk_Cebu_City_Cebu_Province.html] yelp has a list of 'artsy cafes' where i stash my gear-one has a back door that leads to an alley perfect for midnight sessions. [https://www.yelp.com/biz/artsy-cafe-cebu] and the local board cebu art scene dot net has updates on legal walls, though half the posts are ads for art classes. [https://www.cebuartscene.net] i also follow this blog called 'cebu uncensored' that covers underground art scenes. [https://cebuuncensored.blogspot.com]

the city is a layers cake of colonial stone and modern concrete. i found this spot near fort san pedro where the walls are crumbling, perfect for throwies. the history nerds love it, but i just see blank space.

"my lola says during the war, this fort was a prison," a historian type mentioned, "now it's a park where kids play tag-ironic, huh?"

i just checked the weather again-still that soupy 25.22°c with humidity clinging like a lost lover. hope you like that kind of thing when you visit.

if you get bored of the urban jungle, the islands are calling. bohol is a ferry ride away, with its chocolate hills and tarsiers, but the street art there is minimal, more tourist traps. or go to malapascua for diving, but the vibe is chill-no need for quick tags.

i stood in front of this massive mural i did last night. the colors are already bleeding from the humidity. here's a snap:

see how the blue runs into the red? that's cebu for you.

the map of my conquests:

i've hit spots around that area. the coordinates are close to the city center, but i've branched out. from my rooftop hideout, the city lights up like a circuit board. captured this:

i've been here two weeks and i feel like a local. almost. the humidity still gets me, the cops still hassle me, but the art is alive. someone told me that in the 90s, this area was pure slums, now it's condos and cafes. progress, i guess, but it eats the soul.

i'm heading out tonight to hit a new wall i scouted. if i get caught, i'll say i'm adding to the cultural fabric. if not, it'll be another layer in cebu's messy story.

hope you come visit and bring a roll of tape and a sense of humor.
