Cebu: When the Heat Sticks to Your Soul Like Old Socks
welp, landed in cebu with a backpack full of regret and a laptop full of spreadsheets that won't balance themselves. first thing that slaps you awake isn't the airport chaos, it's this *heavy air that grabs you by the face and whispers "you're not in kansas anymore, dorothy." just checked the app and it's...one of those days where the humidity clings to you like a second skin, feels like 25.73? whatever that means. it's hot enough to melt flip-flops.
found this co-working space that's basically a giant air-conditioned fishbowl. everyone's got headphones glued to their ears typing away at novels or probably rewatching netflix under the guise of 'productivity'. the wifi? it's a gamble. sometimes it's faster than my motivation, other times it's slower than a snail on valium. but hey, i roll with the punches. and the slow internet. and the occasional power outage that makes you question life choices.
"heard from this local that if you wanna see the real cebu, you skip the fancy resorts and head to the wet markets. bring a nose plug, though. the durian is an acquired taste, let's put it that way."
speaking of locals, someone told me that the best halo-halo in the city is served out of a cart by this old lady who doesn't speak a word of english. good luck finding her. i tried. and then i got lost. and then i found a pizza place. so it all worked out. when the city gets too much, you can always hop over to mandaue or lapu-lapu for a day trip. just don't trust the traffic. it's like a video game where the cars are the enemies and the pedestrians are the players. and everyone's cheating.
"this backpacker was swearing up and down that if you climb up this one mountain, you can see the whole island. but then he admitted he was really high at the time. so take that with a grain of salt."
the food here? next level. except for the time i ordered something that looked like chicken but tasted like regret. but then again, that was probably the durian. anyway, check out Cebu's best street food spots on TripAdvisor if you're brave enough. and for when you need a break from the chaos, this hidden gem cafe on Yelp has the best ube cheesecake. trust me, it's worth the detour.
that green grass? yeah, that's not cebu. but my brain needs to see grass sometimes. the city's all concrete and motorcycles*. but then again, the beaches are just a jeepney ride away. and oh man, the beaches. white sand, blue water, and the kind of peace that makes you forget about the deadline you're supposed to be meeting. i heard that the locals are super friendly until you mention politics. then it's like a switch flips. best to avoid that conversation over drinks. unless you want to witness a passionate debate that ends with everyone still friends. which, to be fair, is kinda cool.
horse carriage? yeah, that's not cebu either. i think i'm just hallucinating from the heat. but hey, it's all part of the experience. or maybe it's the local events board for Cebu where they sometimes have these cultural things. i dunno, i mostly just scroll through my phone. the pressure here? 1011. whatever that means. all i know is that the air is heavy and the sky is this amazing shade of gray that you don't get in the movies. and the humidity? 92%. that's basically water. which explains why my clothes are always damp. even when i haven't been near water.
black and white lake? yeah, that's not cebu. but the mountains? oh, the mountains. they're everywhere. and they're beautiful. especially when you're stuck in traffic and the view is the only thing keeping you sane. anyway, that's cebu. it's messy and it's beautiful and it's hot. and i'm here for it. until i'm not. until the wifi dies and the humidity wins. until then, i'm gonna go find that halo-halo.
