Cebu Nights: Drumming Through the Heat and Humidity
man, cebu in this weather is something else. i just checked and it's 25.41°c there right now, feels like 26.12°c, hope you like that kind of thing. i'm a touring session drummer, so i'm used to chasing gigs and sweating through rehearsals, but this humidity? it's like playing inside a steam room with no escape. pressure's at 1013, humidity at 81-someone told me that's why my snare sounds a little soggy by the third song. i heard that the locals swear by a quick dip in the sea between sets, but i haven't tried it yet. if you get bored, mactan and oslob are just a short drive away, and i've been told the whale sharks there are worth the trip. i found a tiny bar called *the drum shed on yelp, and apparently it's where all the session cats hang after midnight. someone warned me the beer's cheap but the karaoke is deadly-proceed with caution. i'm staying near colon street, which is loud, chaotic, and exactly my speed. the street food here? unreal. i grabbed some puso and lechon from a stall that smelled like heaven and regret at the same time. if you're into vintage clothes, there's a market on carbon street* that's supposed to have some hidden gems-i'll check it out if i survive another night of drumming. the heat makes everything feel slower, but the music scene here? it's alive, messy, and totally worth the sweat. here's a map so you don't get lost like i did last night:
